A Pic of my first Olds

Here is a scan of a (wrinkled) pic of my first Olds, 1966 Factory L69. This shot was taken in September, 1968. Man I loved that car! Had Firestone Indy 16 x 8's on the front, and 16 x 10's on the rear.

They were some sort of a special buy that the local Firestone dealer had found. The tires had been scuffed at a race track. Had to raise the car up to fit them on, and I loved the look.

My first Olds, a 1960 S88 Holiday SceniCoupe: Black with red/white interior, a 394 c.i. engine, 4 bbl. carb and a factory 3-speed manual tranny.

In 1963 I, a junior in high school at the time, became the 2nd owner. The first owner, my older brother, ordered the car new from Walter & Lennertz Oldsmobile in Merrillville, IN.

Very nice 66. I like the look I had similar wheels on my 63 Fury. Are you sure about them being 16's?

Hi, yes I am. I had to have the rear tires recapped after I burned them down to the cord cause I couldn't find any 16" tires to put on the rims.

Would love to get that car back, believe me! Impossible given its rarity and the passage of 50 + years.

Unfortunately, that car did not survive the 70's. Right after spending about 2k on the motor, headers, and assorted other tweaks, it got stolen. The young kid that stole it got in to a high speed chase with CHP (California Highway Patrol), took a corner too fast, rolled it twice and it came to rest on it's top. 100% totaled. I was devastated........... (of course the little bastard didn't even get hurt)
Funny though, one of the things I remember most vividly about that incident was talking to one of the troopers that was chasing him, and he said it was the fastest car he ever saw. He couldn't catch up to it.............

My first Olds, a '66 too, had the same look! This one still exists, last I knew about 5 years ago.

'cept that was a Chebby.

When I got the '66 442 I have now, it had some interesting similarities to my first '66. Besides both being 4-speed cars. Both were jacked up with 15" Mickey Thompsons on the rear, both had ET mags (quite different styles but the same sizes). Both had the grill bars removed, and both had hood pins. Both had fuzzy dice *and* a garter on the rear view mirror. (Those were very effective speed shop adds that made it much faster)

As this seems to be about 1st cars, I will bump a musty thread. There were a TON of hot cars when I was in high school as well (San Francisco 64 - 68). The 65 Olds 442 caught my eye as a sophmore. I walked to Van Ness Olds to sneak a peek. I was done. It took me 20 years to find one then wife and kids made me WAIT with it for 25 more years before I could move on it. Next week it should be done. I cant stand it.

Wink Next week

Well unless there are unforeseen issues, which I doubt cuz I have covered most everything ans purchased new carpet, underliner, door panels, Convertible top, armrests,CONSOLE cuz an idiot broke the one that was in it, and put a sizable sum on deposit. Car is running and insured and Im like a race Horse at the Kentucky Derby LOL so, if it only takes them a week I should be golden. Only part I havent fixed is the dash above the speedo.. That has a crack and I have to see what the upholstery shop says.

Have a great Weekend!
