Nasty Vibration/Shudder @ ~3,200 rpm and above

Hello All. Looking for a little help troubleshooting my '70 442 with original 455 motor and th400 transmission. I get a nasty vibration/shudder at 3,200 rpm or above. The vibration/shudder begins at ~3,200 RPM and is present at highway speeds (in gear or neutral), low speed in 1st/2nd gear, and at zero mph in neutral. No vibration is present at lower RPM. Thus far I've replaced the drive-shaft and U-Joints, and inspected the damper which appeared to be in good condition. Any ideas regarding the potential cause(s) are greatly appreciated!

If it happens in neutral or park it has nothing to do with wheels, tires or driveshaft. I would look into a missing weight on the flexplate or torque convertor as a first step, especially if it started out of the blue.

If it does it in neutral with no load it should be pretty easy to pin point. Have someone bring the r's up and look at the harmonic balancer, belts, brackets. If nothing found, unbolt the torque convertor and push it back in trans and see if it still does it.

Thanks guys. The harmonic balancer, belts and brackets all look good. Next step is unbolting the torque convertor to see if the vibration is still present.

All new within past 24 months ... should be "ok". Thanks for the suggestion!

Should be, but sometimes new doesn't = good.

Try reclocking the converter on the flywheel. Sometimes you can tune our vibrations. Definitely easier than a converter swap, and cheaper if it works.

Ah, gotcha. I assumed it was loose and he just tightened the bolts.
