How do I know if a 72 442 is a true 442 and not a clone?

1972 442

Sort of an inter-related topic I guess, I had a 1972 Cutlass Supreme with what I believe was the FE-2 or the 442 handling package, it was just a rear sway bar I think, among other items with that package, perhaps a different front sway bar. If memory serves me right it was advertised as a 442 handling package. If I can find the window sticker I'll post a copy of it. Man did that car ride nice! I sold that car in favor of the 1972 Cutlass S I have now, and even though I installed NOS boxed control arms & NOS rear sway bar, standard rear coils and new shocks all the way around, hands down the Supreme with that FE-2 handled better. I miss that most of all about that car

Records for that kind of information were not kept. Since the 442 wasn't a specific model, only records that I know of for U code production engines are the W45/W46. The W30 cars automatically got the X code engine. W29 could be ordered with any of the Cutlass models except the Cutlass Supreme Hardtop coupe.

You'd be thinking wrong Gene. The FE2 suspension included a rear sway bar, boxed rear lower control arms, heavier front sway bar, HD shocks and springs and 14x7 wheels. The FE2 package was included in the W29 option.

Aye, understood, I'll see if I can dig that sticker up to see that it says, I think perhaps it just said 442 suspension.

Got it, and it didn't turn out to be much, I'll say. A B.O.S. from the original dealer saying 442 suspension. Oh well.

Well according to the BOS it's a Cutlass Supreme (3J57) Hardtop with a 4bbl built at Framingham with saddle bronze (code 63) paint. According to the VIN derivative the car is likely an early production, built sometime between July and October of 71. The car has an K code engine which was standard fare for the 72 CS models. As you know, there were never any Cutlass Supreme hardtop 442's offered in the 70-72 models years.

The term 442 suspension is misleading although it is the suspension used in the W29 and W30 cars. It should have read FE2 suspension because that was offered on all the 2 door coupes without having to order the W29 or W30 package.
