? about spare wheel/tire in 72 W30

The car is a 72 442 W30. Can someone tell me if the spare ss1 wheel/tire originally had the trim ring and center cap installed or is it just a bare ss1 wheel?

I'm pretty sure, it came bare.

I can't tell you if this is original or not for sure, but here is the SSI spare from the trunk of my 72 W30. My car has SSIIs on it now when it originally came with SSIs so this could be just one of the original wheels and not actual spare.

If recall correctly there was no trim ring on the spare tire, but the center cap was installed. That is why the hold down bolt went through the rim's lug hole, instead of the hub hole as done with a standard rim.

AnthonyP, what you say is logical but the consensus seems to be that it was bare with no center cap.

Do we have any original owners out there that can back up the consensus?

Check the assembly manual. When I said bare I was referring to the trim ring. I agree that it would have the cap in place. The cap was bolted on. The trim ring just popped off so if you got a flat and changed to the spare, you just swapped the trim ring and you where back in business.

Along with the assembly manual, doesn't the decal in the trunk show the specialty wheel spare configuration as well?

If the spare came without a center cap, Olds would not have needed the special retainer nut that goes in the lug hole instead of the center retainer as on lesser spare wheels. The center cap on SSI wheels requires a socket wrench to remove and replace the bolts on the retainer. This would not have been a required operation to change a tire - otherwise the tool kit would have had to include that wrench.

Joe, your photo, and the one in the assembly manual, also shows a trim ring. But the consensus here is that there should be no trim ring.

I sure don't see any trim ring in the stowage decal I posted. I'll ask again. If the center cap was not pre-installed, how was the tire changer supposed to install it with only the tools in the trunk? The trim ring swaps easily. The cap, not so much. Also note that the same decal was used on cars with the all-chrome SSI wheels.
