442 1/4 mile vs hemi road runner
#6
The 72 is a well sorted out car that includes the driver, the hemi started to run the olds down in the top end and higher mph. The 442 launched well and had a jump on the hemi road runner. It's funny seeing these cars so well looked after and in better than show room condition, I new a guy with a hemi road runner and it just sat out on the street right through the early 90's and we new it was rare back then. With in a mile we had a 70 w30 442 with a W27. A 427 cobra jet. hemi road runner.70 GTO judge, all just sat out on the street.

Wrong production figures on the 1972 W-30.
The cars do burn outs and stage in lanes then make their pass in opposite lanes?
Both look like great cars. That 72 is running very impressive times for a 300 hp engine

If you subscribe to Hemmings Muscle Machines, the current issue with the 428 Cougar Eliminator on the cover has coverage of this years Pure Stock Drags. You'll see this 72 W-30 actually ran an 11.94

yep, thats an Inline Tube car. yep, it's the Pure Stock Drags. that car actually stretches the rules a tad.

How did they stretch the rules 11.94 is insane for such a stock looking car?
Is there any build threads on this car?

Purestock has different rules as to engine tweaks compared to F.A.S.T, which I believe are much more liberal, but, unless you do the teardown to have your car certified stock @ Purestock, then there is no telling what has been done to the engine. Impressive either way.

Inline Tube has a video of this car running down the quarter on their youtube channel as well.

fwiw, thats just the winners of the best out of 3 shootouts.
shameless self plug, I'm like 4th from the bottom on that list. car was down several tenths because of a failing fuel pump. still won my shootout though

and if you are building something not within the "spirit of the rules" I don't think you'd advertise it with a thread.
I will say having gone through the whole process of racing a car at the Pure Stock Drags, it's more than just the motor. everything has to be considered. suspension, alignment, tire pressure, options the car came with, etc, etc. some people have said there is even a difference between Goodyear Polyglas and Firestone Wide Ovals.
agree that 11.91 is impressive from that car

Yes it is not just the engine, weight and traction are a big part in any good et. I would not think that if they were rule stretching they would share it in a article, just wanted to know more about the car. I was looking at a fast class record setting car what stuck me was the rule states no excessive front end lift well lets just say the car is ready for lift off. This is the problem with any form of class racing it's subjective.
What's okay for one might not be okay with another.
I like stock, fast ,stock eliminator, super stock but I think it would be hard to find any of the top running cars that don't take the rules to the limit.

W-30 totals
772 is shown on the video. That is correct if you leave out the HO W-46 cars that also got the L-77 engine. Technically those are W-30 cars.
Accepted production numbers are
442s produced 9845
Cutlass Hardtop Coupes 17
Cutlass S Club Coupe 19
Cutlass S hardtop Coupe 623
Cutlass Supreme Convertible (with W-29 & W-30) 113
Totalling 772 cars. But these do not account for the HO W-46 cars.
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...-olds-w46.html
according to this thread there were 28 W-46 HOs built bringing the total W-30 production to 800 cars.
Perhaps I am splitting hairs but if an HO has an X code VIN & an L-77 engine under the hood that makes it a W-30 to me.

-- Slicks
-- Headers
-- high-stall converter
Of course, the Pure Stockers aren't exactly known for following the rules to a T, either. I'm not trying to rag on anyone in particular, and certainly not the event's organizers, but I've always estimated that a third of the cars meet the rules, a third are violating at least a couple major rules and the driver doesn't know it (someone else rebuilt the engine, etc.) and a third are violating at leat a couple major rules and the driver knows full well. But it's all in fun.

NHRA Stock is like supper stock and Supper stock is like Comp.
They have roller rockers, alum heads, acid ported not all, extrude honed heads not all but you can see the trend in stock. The light weight transmissions with there $1000+ converters are no match for a stock or fast class cars.
