57 Olds fuel pump

57 Olds fuel pump
Had an issue with the car not starting and found the pump wasn't pushing any gas to the carb. Made sure the pump was getting gas but it just wasn't pushing any out. I found the actuator arm was hard to move so I pulled it appart. I found one of the valves in the vacuum chamber had come out and was binding up against the diaphragm keeping it from moving freely. I have attached a picture.
The question I have is that my pump is an AC M3416, stamped on the mounting flange. I can't find a re-build kit specific to this pump and am wondering if it is the right pump for the car. Fusick show the pump should be an AC 4317. Any ides??

1955 - 1958 Olds Fuel Pump
The correct # s are 4317 officially for 1955 - 1957 and 4646 for 1958
--- those are the AC #s -- and they can actually be used for one another.
They, however, are IMPOSSIBLE to find BRAND NEW -- they are in the world of rebuilts or kits only.....
The # you have is on the push rod -- and that is only a "partial" number -- not the fuel pump # -- the 4317 whould be on the flange where the fuel pump mounting gasket mounts....
You will at this point have to go with a fuel pump kit -- if you want to tackle
rebuilding it yourself.....

I now have found a re-build kit for the pump I have but I'm not sure if I should re-build it or buy the appropriate pump. Not so much to keep it stock but to make sure the pump has the right performance for the car. I have emailed Fusick to see if they have any data on this pump. I'm wondering if someone may have swapped the pump and possibly changed the arm on it to suit??

I have attached a picture that shows the marking on the flange.

Carter had a number system with an "M" and four digits -- any chance this is a Carter
Fuel Pump???? I don't know the Carter # off the top of my head -- but I do have some interchanges -- and could check to see what the Carter # is....
Let me know if this is a "Carter" fuel pump?!?!?!?

I've got the guy for you. I would never use anyone else.
Hal Houghton, The Classic Preservation Coalition 518- 374-5078/ 518-366-8405 cel. This guy really nows his pumps. He sold me a kit for my 394, wasn't too difficult to rebuild, but I messed something up. It was leaking. I took it off, sent it to him and he didn't even charge me to rebuild it right. Now that's customer service. Give him a call. If you really want to attempt to rebuild it yourself, I could post up the instructions.

I actually found him on the net and sent him an email yesterday. Apparently the pump, or part of the pump I have is the same as an AC 6585 which was on the 61 Oldsmobile. So it looks like possibly someone has used the glass bowl section to go with this pump. He says he has a rebuild kit for me, just waiting to hear back. He has confirmed the pump volume should be about the same.
Thanks Again

Hal is the guy for info on the old pumps. I bought a rebuild kit from him and was able to rebuild mine with success. He is very helpful. His kits are cheaper than Fusick because you will have to disassemble the diaphragm. Fusick sells the kit with the new diaphragm assembled. A little more challenging.

Success!
I received the re-build kit from Hal this week and rebuilt the pump.
I had to rig up my arbor press with a pin small enough to push the rod through the diaphragm plates which was a bit challenging. Followed his directions and all went well. Definitely a job to take your time with!!

Mark glad everything went well for you. Hal really is a good guy. Hard to find people that really want to help you, and charge a fair price nowadays. When I pressed mine together we used a bit from a brake line flaring kit in the press. Now you need to post up some photos of your car ... please.

If you go to this link or my profile I have some pictures there in my album. There is a picture of my current truck project as well.
