Engine Chuggles when stopping
Okay folks here's one for ya. MY 1988 cutlass supreme classic brougham chuggles when I come to a stop. I thought I had an engine problem but have not found nothing. I'm now thinking the problem is in the tranny/torgue converter lockup (TCC). Everything runs fine, just when I approach to stop I get this chuggle like the engine tries to stall, but it does not stall. I really feels like to torgue converter unlock right when I stop. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME? I'mm gonna change the TCC selonoid this weekend. I have a 200-r4 (overdrive) tranny. THANKS Mike

Disconnect the tcc connector and see if that solves your problem.

Mike,
I agree with the others - it most like is the TC solenoid. My '86 has this same problem. Pulled the tranny connector, problem gone. I have the parts but have not done it yet. If you do it yourself, let us all know how you did it and maybe take a few pics also. It would surely help me out when I get the time to change mine. There WAS a good tech writeup on an MC site, but that site has been long gone (for too long...)

Thanks guys, sounds like you all agree with what I found! I purchased a TCC selonoid today for $30.00 and will be replacing it this weekend. I'll also disconnect the TCC and give results prior the changing the TCC selonoid.

Okay I disconnected the TCC and the engine stills stall/chuggle at a stop. I quess ther's no need to replace the TCC? What other options do I have? I have also done a compression test on the engine all cylinders read around 150-160 psi, with the exception of one(#6) which reads about 120 psi. I put some oil in the cylinder and compression went-up (bad rings). Could this be causing this slight/chuggle stall when stopping?
Thanks

I take it you disconnected the big connector at the tranny?? The 120psi cyl. is a cause for concern, but I would not think that would cause it to want to stall at each stop. ![]() ![]()

Don't think the 120psi cylinder is a concern right not either, that's why I started looking at the tcc. Yes, I disconnected the big connector, drove the car and no changes in engine speed from the converter, but still chuggled when stopped. Could the tcc check ball be sticking causing this problem or should I just trench the car with gas and set it a fire?
