C5 Stamped on Transmission

On the top of the transmission, where it bolts to the block there is an embossed "C5" on the transmission.

Is this normal? Car is a 1972 Cutlass with a 350 motor. Motor is original to the car, as the number on the block tag match the vin.

But c5? Isn't that a ford transmission? The trans doesn't look like the c5 in any pictures.

Just curious, couldn't find another thread that asked the question.

The C4 and C6 were the automatic three speed transmissions used by Ford. I don't know what the C5 stamped on your transmission indicates. Maybe it is some sort of production stamping that indicates when it was assembled.

I know this is really old, but I stumbled across it and wanted to bump it up. Anyone else had a weird number stamped on the top of their transmission?

It doesn't look like a stamped number, but a casting number.

When I looked at the photo's in the thread posted above, that one was C1, so I'm thinking you're right. That's probably true.
