leaky pan gasket
okay. i am on about my forth time messing with the pan gasket since dropping the transmission in my 65 olds dynamic 88 w/ th400. it will not stop leaking around the front of the pan near the dust cover. i have replaced the gasket twice. the last time i dropped the pan i put ultra gray silicone sealer down, then the gasket and more silicone on top of that. it is still leaking. i put a level on the pan lid it shows level. im going to order another gasket and try again, but im about ready to weld it shut. does anyone have any ideas? can you buy new pan lids yet for these? chris

Try to get a cork gasket and glue it to pan with copper coat not the spray turn upside down put weight on it & let dry, Then coat other side & bolt on lightly in a pattern.do not smash the gasket Use carb cleaner to clean surfaces

ive been using the cork style. where do you get this copper coat? your not talking about the copper color silicone are you? do you know the torgue setting for the pan? i believe its 13 pounds, but not sure. chris

NAPA & Orielys both have it here, Not sure on torque,13 inch pounds, ? I just snug the bolts down with a 1/4 " ratchet from right side to left in a pattern.Don't use silicone it has a tendency to squeeze out, your better off with no sealer. Copper coat comes in a brush on type can Shake well

Even if the pan you have is flat it still may have dimples around each bolt hole. If the bolts were over torqued it could cause the gasket surface to have waves in it. This will lead to a bad seal. Be careful when using any kind of sealing compound on an auto transmission pan. An automatic transmission is not resistant to any kind of debris or gasket material in the fluid.

Also make sure your bolt holes aren't recessed from past tightening. A trick I do with these issues is to put a 7/16 " socket on the bolt side of the pan, and tap the tranny side of the pan with a 1/4" short socket extension. This presses the bolt holes toward the bolt, and helps pull the pan tight between them. Just an idea.

Is the leak at the rear of the pan where the torque converter cover is?...Are you changing the rubber seals as well??...Are you sure the rear main oil seal is not leaking???

ive replaced the front and rear seals. the leak appears to be at the front of the pan gasket next to the torque converter cover. i dont think its the front seal. its been replaced, not that that means anything. ive taken the dust cover off thinking it was the front seal, but its been dry in there, so thats what leads me to believe its the front end of the pan gasket.
