I know the pan is different, but does a 68 Toronado's 455 use a different oil pump than other Olds 455s of the same year

The pump is the same but the pickup and screen are different to match the Toro pan.

Here's the two side by side. The Toronado pump is on the left. The pickup is in a little different location and it may hang a little lower, but I'm not sure if its really lower or not. Joe, if someone uses the Toro pan without changing the sump do you think it will make a big difference? John

The Toro pan sump is narrower and slightly offset to the passenger side as compared to the RWD sump. This is to provide clearance for the transaxle.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but are the pickups interchangeable? Looking at a high volume pump that has the RWD pickup on it, and want to put it in my Toro 455. In other words, can I pull the pickup off my stock pump and put it on the aftermarket pump?

Yes. The stock pickup is a force fit into the stock pump, so it is highly recommended that you spot weld it in position, to prevent the possibility of disaster.

Thanks, I thought it was, but wanted to be sure prior to purchasing the pump. Spot weld sounds like a good idea.

I thought the Toronado oil pan held a quart more oil? That would make it deeper.

There's more than one dimension that can be changed to increase volume, however, in this case the Toro pan is slightly deeper. Toro on the left, BBO in the middle, SBO on the right.
