Am I correct to replace the rear main seal on my 65 400 motor with the Ford 460 neoprene seal number BS 40032? I see that number is a replacement for 455 but am not sure of the 400 motor. Also mentions about some trimming on other posts.

I believe its the same on the 400 as the 455, as the crankshaft journal size are the same, but maybe someone else can confirm that.

For trimming, I watched a youtube video made by BTR that showed him doing it, and I did the same steps on mine... was not a big deal- and my 455 went together fine and did not leak. Can't ask for more than that.

All BBOs use the same rear seal.

Ok, but can the ford seal be installed with the crank still installed like the rope seal can?

Probably not. I tried to do this on a 350 Olds (with the AMC 258 seal) and failed.

Well in that case I'll stick to the rope seal then.

Is the engine out of the car? If not is the trans out? Speedy sleeve the crank if the groove is deep enough to catch your nail on. Theres a right and wrong way to install these sleeves. If you go for it email me for details.

Um...

He's talking about a REAR main, not the front crank seal.

FYI, I always install a sleeve when replacing the front crank. You can buy the kit from FelPro with the front seal and sleeve together.

aaa **** be tough to stretch it over that dam flywheel flange wouldn't it....get out the sneaky-Pete. I just work on way to many different engines, not enough Olds...damper snout sleeve yes. Ya...so bfg dont bother contacting me for that advice as it doesn't exist.
I've not had luck with R&R-ing rope seals and getting them to seal. I've always had to R&R the crank and get it surfaced then install a new seal. Others have had success here not me.
