67 Cutlass 330/ which carb

I just bought my 67 Cutlass 2 spd auto about a week ago, engine # 394417 & Joe P already confirmed its a 330. My question is what is the orig carb that should be run on this motor ? It has a Rochester 4B on it with no tag for ID. I found a long strip of numbers stamped in the carb body 27157 RJ 1719. If it ran fine I would leave well enough alone but the idle kinda does what it wants. Sometimes it idles great but if u leave it idle too long it feels like someone pulled off a plug wire. Going down the road low speed or highwway it runs smooth. I want to get this ride as close to bone stock as possible...And as always, I appreciate everybody's time & help.

Oh. You menat the block casting number, not the engine number.

The engine number is stamped onto the front surface of the passenger side head (or the back of the driver's side, if it's been apart...).

Welcome to the site! Let me throw some pictures up for you to check out. That number sounds right for a 1967, but here's two different ways quadrajets had the numbers on them. The first is off a 1966 and my 1967 Cutlass has the same round disc for the number. The second one is from a 1975 and I know this method was used in 1968 and it sounds like what you've got.

Next, the engine number you've posted is the casting number between the water pump and intake, like this

But the engine number that Eric is asking about is stamped in the front of the head, like this 1966 330 engine.

Also... in another thread you mentioned you have C heads which would be correct for a big block. Here's a couple pictures of where the 330 head should have a large 4 cast into it, while the 400, 425 & 455 would have the letter C in the same location. This casting would be on the drivers side to the left of the front most spark plug and the pass side next to the firewall.

So if you haven't figured out yet I like pictures... much easier to communicate and I've got the clutter of Olds parts to go through for the pictures. John

That just means someone put the head on with this end facing the firewall. Not a problem as long as you have the holes to mount the alternator or AC compressor, etc.

But this tells us you have big block heads on a small block. From what I've read, that will drop your compression. So you may want to swap the correct heads on it, or upgrade to a big block. Also I believe the head code you mentioned is correct for a 1967 400 engine in a 442. So if you don't use that it will be a nice trade stock item.

Can you see a large letter C cast next to the spark plugs on your heads?

V••••••G is a 442 number, though I didn't think they went all the way up to 4••,•••.

Are these B or C heads? Because big block heads on a small block motor would not run well without modifications.

- Eric

edit: Gee, John, you beat me to it .

well i do agree that my research tells me about them being for a 400, that led me to thinkingh that i may have a 400 but the engine numbers say different 394417 3 exactly how it looks. And the car is a dog off the line,,

Cool

I didnt even know that there would be other numbers as your pics show. Well this is good it gives me a great reason to pop the hood on old Rosie & look for head numbers while drinking coffee...All of your help is greatly appreciated..I will also try to get some closer pics of these area's...I looked again & cleaned it up better. My numbers/letters may be a W instead of a V, the number now looks like W483070 C & the end letter now sure looks like a C that i thought was a G. very rusty & not stamped real deep, im also looking through a mirror. I appologize for the run around..Also at the number 1 & 8 cylinder there is a raised # 4.......Thanx for everyones time.

W483070G (there was no "C") is a 1967 4bbl 10.25:1 330.

#4 heads are correct for that motor.

So that's one mystery solved.

Alright ! Thanx a million MD....Sounds better to me but i have one more question. LOL..I would think that a 330/320 would have more oomph to it, it may be becuz its a heavy boat or maybe the carb is not doing its job.. I have to say this thing is slowwwww...Cruises at 80 on the highway beautiful so i cant complain. She is probably tired too..I know I am & im a little older then old Rosie is...Thank you again..

Carb appears to be era and possibly the original. I would try and rebuild that one first.

carb. number is correct, but the date code indicates that it's a 1969 factory service carb. the original carb. would have the round tag with the number, not stamped in to the carb. body, and the date code would not be 1719

O.K Bill, it's very much appreciated. If thats the case I'll stick with it & do the rebuild & hope that the idle stops changing its mind whenever it decides too. Starting to remind me of my Ex wife..Have a great day..

you may have worn throttle shaft bores. after you clean it all up nice, check for slop. if excessively worn, you're going to want them bushed.
