How should i go about getting my car to idle smooth and not shoot black smoke everywhere?Car starts with pedal all the way down and in park only smoothes out when flooring it.57 super88 v8 4 bbl

If the exhaust is spewing black smoke, the engine is running way too rich. Your choke may be stuck or misadjusted, and flooring the accelerator is the only way to get the choke plate to open. The carburetor may also be flooding, due to the float valve leaking or misadjusted. For further advice, we need more information on when the problem started, and what you've done so far to find the cause. In general, problems at idle are fuel related and not ignition related. The carburetor may need adjustment of the idle jets, or cleaning and rebuilding. There may be a vacuum leak at the base of the carburetor, or somewhere else on the intake manifold. The distributor vacuum advance may not be working properly, perhaps due to a leaking vacuum line, or the ignition timing may otherwise be incorrect. Leaking valves ( intake or exhaust) can prevent an engine from idling smoothly, although your problem sounds like carburetion.

There is a guy that rebuilt my Rochester 4bbl for around $200. Some idiot epoxyed my carb together, so he had to get me another core. He charged $75.I had a rough idle due to the throttle bushings and leak down issues after when hot.
Mountain Man fuel systems in AK:He did eveything including re-bushing the throttle shafts and epoxying the float bowl well plugs. Carb came back to me looking brand new, and worked great! Seeing how a rebuild kit was 50-75 bucks, I thought it was worth it.
