A real challenge - Block ID issue

I have an engine with no car to be able to help identify it by.

I have learned that the engine was originally in some sort of Oldsmobile.

I was able to narrow this enigne down to being an Olds thanks to the manufacturer of the exhaust manifolds that are on the motor having a corresponding part number.

Behind the water pump the only code I see is 6509GM5.0LG.

I assume that it's a 1965 September 5 liter. ?? they made a 5.0 in 65?

There was one more number slopily punched into the block to the left of the number mentioned above. It reads 174182. That's it.

Viewing the top of the engine on the intake manifold the firing order is 18436572. The intake manifold also says 5A on it with it's own casting number being 22526212.

The oil filter is on the passenger side rear and bottom. The starter motor is on the driver side rear and bottom. The distributior is on the rear of the engine. The oil filler neck is on the front and top of engine more on the passenger side.

I can provide as much info as any one needs. If you need more data feel free to ask, but there aren't any other identifying numbers that I can see on this engine except what is on the intake manifold gasket but I have been referencing that number and I think it was provided with the marine cooling system that's installed on the engine. I have a ton of pictures of this engine too.

If you want to boost your ego- it mould help me out a lot too with getting this beast running and wired.

Feel free to e-mail me- notacountryboy@hotmail.com.

I can also e-mail you high res pictures with great detail of this engine if you would like.

any info would be awesome. it's really become somewhat of a puzzle. I get clues here and there- hopefully one day I can figure this thing out. Hopefully before it gets too cold to take the boat out.

Thanks,

Jon

That's amazing! how did you pull 87 307 from 6509GM5.0LG?

I was doing some more research and found the engine to be an Olds 307, 85-90 based on the intake manifold casting number (something which was well hidden behind the Edelbrock and I also had wrong in my post by a digit.

Well this day has turned out to be a good one so far!

Thanks!

Lucky. Thanks again. I reeeeeely appreciate it.

Alot.

I feel like my life can go on now... It has been such a headache so far with not knowing what that engine was.

Does that book say what compression the engine should be putting out?

Someone trashed all my Chiltons that covered this motor... :-/
