Rough start on unlevel surface?

I parked my '72 Cutlass in my yard, sunday while I built a storage shelter for the winter. When I went to start it, it just cranked like it was out of fuel, finally starting after a few minutes of trying and pumping etc. It was parked on a pretty good bump and was leaning to to the left. Anyone ever had a problem like this? Carb/float issue? Seems fine now on flat ground.
