Differences between 1964 and 1965-on 330 V8’s?

I am "New" to Oldsmobile engines, and I realize things change on introduction year cars, but can someone explain the major differances between say a 64 and a 65 330? Alot of the time while searching for parts, they don't even list a 1964 Cutlass (but might list a 1964 F-85?)
I am looking at rebuilding the car I recently bought to a daily-driver.(Comfort & Reliability that looks Cool!)

One difference would be the heads. 64 uses roller rockers on shafts. If i recall correctly they would be #1 heads.

I have an all original 330 from a 64 F-85 sitting in my garage on a cradle. If you need some detailed photos or misc info i can try to help - im no expert.

Not all 64 330's had the rocker shafts, only the early ones. Yes 64 heads are #1's and 65's were #2's other than that they were just about identical.

the problem I am running into shows a differant water-pump(and hoses) from 64 to 65 for the 330, and a differant distributor?

Water pump is one year only. Not sure what would be different about the distributor.

For all practical purposes F85 and Cutlass are used interchangeably. The factory refers to all A-body cars thru 1970 or so as F85; after that they are frequently referred to as "A" car.

64 w/p suction is on the left side of the car; 65-later it moved to the right.

64 330 heads used rocker shafts most of the year until about mid-July 64 when the last 2000 or so sets used rockers and studs. These second type 1964 heads are #2 heads also from my experience.

Not following you on distributor. Parts book lists the same number for 1964-67 330 V8 except UHV ignition (early electronic and different from HEI). Unless your parts catalog is distinguishing between the 1964 394 distributor vs the 1964 330... Olds book shows 59-64 except F85 or J88. 61-3 F85 215s naturally used a different distributor, but the 64 Jetstar 88 used the same 330 as 1964 F85/Cutlass.

As noted, the water pump and lower hose are one-year-only parts due to the change on the pump inlet from driver's side to passenger side. Because of this, the balancer and timing tab are also unique to the 1964 330 motor. Also note that the PS pump bracket on the A-body (F85/Cutlass cars) is different from the one used on the Jetstar 88 that year.

Not that it matters much but A-body engine numbers stamped in the head start with "T" and J88 Start with "U"

this is the issue with the Water Pump. The heads on my car are #1's. and it was a 1964 394 I was looking at in my parts book(my Bad)-Thanks

so do I need to have my water pump rebuilt or just find a core and have it rebuilt?

Autozone lists them as special order and NAPA's site says they sell them. If you don't have a core you'll just have to eat the core charge

I don't trade with AutoZone or O'Reilly's, they are like Walmart here.(I live in a small town, and try to support local business') The NAPA is locally owned and I do most of my business there or at B&G Auto(a mom & pop). The guys at NAPA said they could order one, but came up empty from the closest Dist. Warehouse(Dallas) They are still trying. B&G sources alot of old autopart warehouses and they might be able to locate a NOS! We'll see.-Thanks Dan

I've heard that one, but the version I think is more accurate is New Original Stock, as opposed to aftermarket parts (that may still be old, but not factory).

The 64 shaft mounted rockers were cast iron but no rollers or bearings in them. I have a good pair of bare #1 heads that I got about 35 years ago and hot tanked.

How about this one then Joe, NORS....I've seen that and always thought it meant "New Old Remanufactured Stock". Am I wrong on this?
