Freeze Plugs 72' 350 in 53'

I have a 1953 Oldsmobile 88 with a Camaro Sub frame Oldsmobile 350 out of a 72 Cutlass well its a basket case! In any event I have been working on her a little her and a little there for a bout a year now and went to put antifreeze in this tired old motor but it leaked like the Titanic out of the Freeze Plug passenger side closest to the front of the motor(Among other places) But at closer examination it had a hole in the center. I have tried getting it out but cant. Do I need to pull the head? I there an easy way? It also leaked out of the bottom of the water pump but I bought a new one(thinking it was just the gasket though.)

If the plug has enough integrity left, drive it into the water jacket with a close but not tight fitting socket, then turn it and pull it out with vise grips.
