distributor ?

will a 56 distributor fit a 55 324?

Yes, it is easier to adjust points because of window in distributor cap.

If fit perfectly, it is one of those easy swaps that will make it easier to set the dwell with a meter rather than trial and error by adjusting points in the 55 distributor by pulling the cap.

As has been said it works well. The '56 was the first year of the newer type "window" distributor. I have had one in my '55 for years. Adjustments are easier and parts are more readily available. There is a slight difference between both mechanical and vacuum advance mechanisms, but I've never detected any problems due to it. The shaft oiler is easier to use on the '56. After you complete the distributor change, you may also want to consider changing to a '56 carburetor if you have a 4 barrel. The '56 has auxiliary valves on the secondaries while the '55 does not. It's also a "bolt on" change.
