Since the cam rotates at half the crank speed, either way is correct. Either both at 12:00 or crank at 12:00 and cam at 6:00. Of course, you still need to make sure the distributor is installed with No. 1 firing on the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke.

There are 2 timing marks on my crank sprocket. Is the correct timing mark the one to the left of the shear pin or to the right?

The crank sprocket that is in the 350 has 2 marks on it. It seems to be original because it still has the plastic like cam sprocket on it. 1 is to the left of the shear pin and the other is to the right. I am in the process of tearing the 403 timing cover off so I don't know if that is the same way or not. The new one I bought from coyles just has the 1 mark to the left of the shear pin so I guess I just answered my own question. Any advice on getting the crank sprocket off without damaging anything?

On my '79 350, I had to pull the key out of the crankshaft before the sprocket would come off. Slot in sprocket doesn't go full width.

Got the timing chain in the 403 and timed it. Soon after that the lower end started knocking. I have shipped my 350 out to be machined and will be rebuilding it as soon as it gets back. Thank you for all of your help and I have learned that its always good to have a spare engine hanging around!
