Talking 12 second 350 olds cutlass magazine article

I have a large car magazine collection dating back to the 60s, I used to have a hot rod or perhaps it was a car craft that was between 73-77 that had an article on a 73-77 cutlass a guy raced in pure stock or something like that. it was a olds 350 with headers and a qjet and ran 12s... does anyone remember this article or have it? itd be cool to post it up for us 350 guys. I remember being impressed wondering how he got 12s out of a "stock olds 350" . it had slicks. im sure it had some 1 inch converter and 9.88 gear lol but id be interested to know the setup.

I would also be interested in learning how a "stock" low compression 73-77 350 in that era Cutlass could be that quick. Didn't that era engine have something like 170 HP / 275 Ft-Lbs output?

yes sir fun71... and on top of that its a 8.5.1 - 8.0.1 compression motor depending on year... in the picture it was twisting up hard coming out of the hole. stock they were 11 seconds 0-60 and a 18 second quarter mile from what ive read.

Those guys do more with less, some of the things they do are amazing. Running high 12s with a 350 isn't that difficult, doing it and keeping it streetable and fun to drive............that is another thing.

But doing it with a stock 350 would involve some sort of witchcraft, voodoo, or other magical incantations.

Not really, when you add 5300 stall converters and 4.88 gears. Those guys are awesome and do incredible things, but "stock" is a relative term.

As Captjim says, "stock" doesn't mean the stock most people know. Look into the race car thread and on the last page there is a list of winning times at a NHRA event in 1969. Like Ron Garey running 12.30s in F/S; amazing then. Today that wouldn't make the show.....try 10.60s or so. The only thing "STOCK" is the name of the class.
