Factory diff on a 55

Hey all, I've done a fair bit of mods on my 55 and due to being in Australia I had to fit a sbc power glide combo in my olds. The new engine is around 400-450hp and was wondering if the factory diff would hold up? I have read that they are pretty strong? Cheers dan

Should be good to go. Back in the day Olds and Pontiac were the preferred rear ends for hot rods. Tedd

These differentials became very popular at one time in "round track racing" because word got around that they were hard to tear up. Larry

You could order a steep one...

I think the "highway gears" for '55 was 3.08, but I think you could order
"mountain gears" as steep as 5.33. My '55 Olds shop manual is out in the garage, but I think they came that steep.

Thanks guys,

Anyone have any idea if you can get new centers for the 55 diff? and also what type of diff is it?

Mine is way too low geared for the engine gearbox im running.

Cheers

Dan
