Posi rear end

looking for a decent used posi rear end with gears ranging in size from 3:73 to 3:08. This will be for my 1972 cutlass. 10 or 12 bolt doesnt matter...just want axle to stay the same width so prefer type O

Thanks!

If u get a type O they are hard to find in a posi and hard to find parts for. if ur car is a 72 cutlass then u can do a 70-72 chevelle skylark not for sure but i think nova gt lemans. there are probably more. they are all the same width and bolt ins. the 10 bolt 8.5 parts are everywhere and good priced.

alek72us - only the 'A' body rears will fit, Chevelle, Le Mans, and Special.
Athough close in width, gt[?] and Nova have leaf springs, and won't work.
If I were to change the whole housing, I'd go for a 12-bolt, as the xtra $'s would be worth the xtra strength, to me!

but the 12 bolt type O is the same as 8.5 inner as the 10 bolt. so its not much better strength if u want the 12 bolt strength u need the 12 bolt chevy rear end. which is the chevelle.

Sorry - to me, a 12 bolt is ONLY a Chevy!
Yes, the Chevelle is the only one to work in a Cutlass 4-link, and the early 64-67 housings are 2 inches narrower - can help tire clearance!
The type 'O' or 'P' are usually refered to as a 10 bolt 12 bolt, ie: 10 bolt gears in a 12 bolt housing!

u r ok we just need to clearify better for the ones asking the ? so we don't confuse then more then they need to be.

yes if u need x-tra strenth the 12 bolt chevy would be best. the type O i would get if i was doing a stock/stock build. but the 10 bolt 8.5 is cheap/available/u can also make the strong.

The 12-bolt O-axle does have an 8.5" 10-bolt ring gear, but those internals are unique to themselves. You can NOT install the 71-up 8.5" 10-bolt guts into the 12-bolt O-axle housing.

Deedsntitles,
I can sell you a completely rebuilt 71-72 8.5" 10-bolt posi rear, any gear ratio, for $975.00 plus the freight.Everything inside is new. This is the same style rear that came in the 71-72 Cutlass/442,and the 71-72 Skylark/GS.These are good rears, and will handle plenty of power.

Rick,

507olds aka Trick is very knowledgeable about the Cutlass game and expecially those rear ends. We have dealt with him before and I can say he is a standup guy....
