Hello Gentlemen, I decided I need space more than I need this crankshaft, so I think I will let it go to a new home. Its a 68 455 factory steel crankshaft, part number 400943, so because some of you have a lot of free time on your hands and need something to complain about ... EDIT: $700obo if interested please pm me. I can ship the crankshaft in a crankshaft box, I am in Washington state though so plan on shipping being around $75.00

Asking price

Did you notice the part where it states that all parts for sale must have an asking price?
Good luck with your sale.

I have plenty of experience buying and selling parts on here, no one has ever gotten upset until now. That being said PM me if you are interested.
I have to measure journals and see, just haven't had a chance to yet. I measured it when I first got it, I vaguely remember them being standard.

Removed crank from block, block has a fresh set of .010 main bearings in it, so the mains have been turned .010. Not sure about rod journals, ill find out tomorrow, i can only assume they are .010 as well. Its safe to say the crank hasn't been used since being turned due to fresh bearings and fresh cylinder walls.

I recently sold mine for $600, std/std. I paid $600 for it too.
When I see an ad that states make an offer I just move on... usually it means the buyer is phishing for a sucker or it winds up being a waste of time with the negotiations because usually no one wants to pay out the *** for something but doesn't also want to deal with a butt hurt seller when they don't like their offer.
Best to just not waste anyone's time and put $xxx OBO if you're ever considering offers to give an idea on starting point.

a steel crank was only offered in 1968 455's in some (not all) deltas, toronado's i suspect the cost of forging prevented the entire run of 455's to carry the steel crank and the nodular 'N' crank became standard in 68 on

Starting to feel like I am back in high school... this thread is getting pretty juvenile, so please if you aren't interested in the crankshaft, you should probably just keep your comments to yourself. I am not able to get on here as much as I would like to, I don't want to spend all my time answering ridiculous posts.
88hurstolds, apparantly you didnt see this post:
This is not a Nodular Iron crankshaft which is considered to be the standard 455 crankshaft since 99% of the engines came with that crank, this is the extremely rare steel crankshaft. if you look up the 400943 number in any Oldsmobile literature, you will see what I mean.
Even though I dont know what year this crankshaft is, I agree with your statement.
They are very difficult to find, that being said its hard to put a value on it, which is why I started by just asking for a best offer. I am not hurting for money, nor am I looking for a "sucker", the crankshaft is what it is, but its sitting in my shop next to several other parts and I haven't touched it in like 5 years, so I figured if someone really wanted this for their collection, they would throw me an offer I wouldn't be able to refuse

from 442.com
400943 455 '68 Forged Steel. In fullsize, w/2bbl, w/tow package.
here is a comparable on ebay right now
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oldsmobile-4...item280455fe79
here is a breakdown of cranks from some info I have
1968 Forged steel crankshaft, they came in 68 Toranodo's and 69 Hurst/olds and even in some 68-69 2 bbl 455's. They are easy to spot by the wide forging mark on the front throw or look for the crank forging # 400943 which is located on rear throw.
1969-1972 Nodular Iron crank is the next best crank to use. It's casting number is # 397363 and are easy to spot with that big N stamped on the front throw. These cranks have proven to be good to 6000 plus rpm's and are just fine for anything short of a full on competition motor. Avoid the cranks with the same casting number #397363 but lack the N on the front counterweight.

The debate of factory big block cranks becomes personal, some feel that the forged steel crank is a step up others feel the added weight is a liability.
Most hard core builds use a aftermarket forged steel crank that is purpose built.
Good luck with the sale of your crank

If it doesn't sell contact Mondello out in California. They are always looking for these things. I had a STD/STD one that had been cleaned and magged for sale for $750 for a few months on here and another Olds site with no luck. I put it on Ebay and they gave me $875 for it. Yours being undersize already and not yet magged maybe less.
They like to grind them, throw them in the freezer and charge an arm and a leg for them.

Well, I'm rebuilding my engine that broke at the NMCA nationals event in Bradenton last March. 455 over 060, cam broke and dropped a piece in to the crankcase and broke the crank. It was a Nodular crank and served me well 10 years. I can buy Eagle cranks, found a couple of Nodulars and your crank. I know about them, If you feel that it is usable to go into racing, I don't twist more than 5600 and the trap rpm is 6000, I will pay the $700.00 and hope you pay the shipping. If not we have to wait till my Social Security hits the bank.

I have not heard back from the interested buyer after several messages. Crankshaft is still for sale, current price is $725 shipped. Please remember I am on the west coast, so its easily going to cost me $50-$60 to ship this crankshaft. I think that is a pretty good deal for this very rare piece of history. Let me know guys
