Recently acquired this NOS G.M. hood used on the '71-'72 Cutlass S or 442 without AC. No louvers or trim, just the hood. The box has long ago rotted away but the sticker is still on the bottom. It has some very minor shelf wear but nothing major & ZERO rust. Local pick up in Indianapolis is preferred but I will ship through Fastenal if need be.

It would also be correct for an A/C car in 71. It was only in 72 they omitted the slotted air intakes. Now you have a broader market. Good luck with the sale.

HMM Confused. A car with of without A/C dictated what hood you got?

Yes, correct. I know it seems odd, but only in 72 did they omit making the piercings for the air intakes at the back of the hood. I suppose it really is unnecessary with A/C and it would have omitted a step in manufacturing. I have attached a picture.

From the 1972 ASM, the standard (non-AC) hood was part#407257. The AC hood was part#411854. The same thing was done with the louvered 442 hoods; standard hood was part#407256 and the AC hood was part#411855. I've attached pdf files of the ASM pages for reference at the end of this post.

Brian, you wouldn't believe the number of folks who say I'm wrong on this topic. You and I obviously know the difference between 72 AC hoods though. Just thought of something else that makes the 72 AC hood a nicer thing - repainting the hood doesn't get overspray in cowl vents!
