In Iowa rails to trails has really gotten going in the past 20 years. There are still good swaths of abandoned rail road grade, minus the rails and ties. Some bridges left in others with the decking removed.
Alot of railroads that were abandoned 1985 and prior was returned to farmland by the adjoining farmers. Which is bummer where I live, a nice trail of 30 miles could be in place to enjoy..
