455

SOLD

I have a rebuilt 455 that I bought to put in my wagon till my new build was done. Well my machine shop completed it faster than I thought so Im selling the one I bought.

This motor was installed, started and properly broken in, but never saw any miles. It sat for a couple years untouched when it was oil primed again, then restarted to show me it ran fine, then I purchased it.

Its a F1 block .030 over, forged 14cc dish pistons. Im not sure what the heads are because there's no casting letter. According to the previous owner, It has been balanced, line bored and has reconditioned rods, Mondello JM 20-22 cam, sar 455 roller tip rockers, rb180 arp rod bolts, r100 oil restrictors, sp754 high volume oil pump, sk240 valve springs, hl230 lifters, double roller timing chain, performer intake, dual point distributor and long, heavy duty or with a/c water pump. What you see is what you get minus the valve covers.

There's probably 2k in parts plus machine and assembly? Im asking $2200 obo.

Pick up in NJ only. No shipping.

The only issue is I do not have any receipts for this motor or the work done to it, but I have have had the valve covers off and saw the new rocker arms so believe the previous owner of what was done to it. He only had a hand written paper with the Mondello part #'s and prices on it. If I dont sell it, I'll more than likely use it in my 69 442 hard top project.

there are quite a few painted 455 engines out In NJ claiming to be rebuilt. I have seen 3 already, 1 would not allow me to remove the oil pan to inspect after I noticed a broken bolt siliconed in place, and the other 2 as soon as I took the valve covers off you could clearly see it was a scam. If you can provide me with the rebuilder, they easily should have documentation, then I would be interested in coming close to the number your looking for, If not its a potential boat anchor at which I'll take a gamble its rebuildable at $400.

I hate to say it, Tony, and with no disrespect intended toward you, but I think you may end up keeping that motor and using it later.

The problem is that you, a trustworthy guy, didn't build it, and can't vouch for it personally. It was built by some other guy (whom you may or may not know and trust), who had no paper. At this point, it's a third-hand story, so though it may be a great engine, very few people are going to take the personal risk of shelling out real money for it.

As I say, no disrespect to you, but even you don't know what's inside it.

SirLexus, I got taken by a guy in NJ selling a completely original stock 2bbl smallblock.
He swore his buddy had driven the low-mile donor into the shed 25 years ago, they'd pulled the low-mile motor and scrapped the 4-door, and the engine had sat untouched indoors since then. The engine looked like what he said - clean, completely original, down to the dated factory plug wires and emission control hoses.
Only thing he didn't mention was that it had sat outdoors at some point, seized up, and he'd completely disassembled it, tried to remove the rust in the bad cylinder with a die grinder, then bolted the entire engine back together finger tight.
I looked it over carefully, but it just never occurred to me that someone would disassemble and then reassemble a non-desirable stock motor like that.
When I called him afterward, he said he "forgot" he'd done that so many years ago.
I could have left the thing on his lawn, but then I wouldn't have the spare parts or the scrap value (which was slightly less than what I'd paid), and I'd still be out the money, so I kept it.

I've done a LOT of buisness here on this board and my reputation means more to me than a 2200 motor. I wouldnt screw anyone. I believe in what comes around goes around, treat people like you would want to be treated, be honest and be humble.

I would have NO issue with anyone who wanted to pull the pan to look inside this motor. I would even let you pull a head. I have an extra set of felpro head gaskets to throw in if you bought it. If its not what I believe it is, I'll keep it or adjust the price.

BTW, the motor is only freshly painted because it was slated to be installed into my own car.

I think I misunderstood something you posted? If you or anyone wants to tear it down to inspect it I have gaskets to give you so you can put it back together if your interested in it.

WTony, in no way was I implying you were screwing anyone, was just mentioning how I came across 3 engines already that people have purchased from another person whom claimed they were rebuilt, and they were not.

I realized that after the fact, thats why I said I misunderstood.
You want to tear it down we'll tear it down, but understand that I dont want to tear it apart, we see its what I said it is, then you say I'll give you $400. That would be a waist to do that. But I have head gaskets and maybe even an oil pan gasket in case you want to look inside.
I dont have valve covers to go with the motor though.

I just would take the pan and valve covers off, It would be fairly easy to tell from that point what the story is. I have brand new valve cover gaskets I would put back on, even if it turns out to be a dud. If for some reason it was not rebuilt I was offering you the $400 if it looks like I could get it rebuilt, If it looks good inside like its been rebuilt, we could certainly discuss your $2200 price.

Tony,

Are the casting numbers over the center exhaust ports also ground off?

Joe Id have to look at that. The motor is in my friends garage where I'll be installing my new build into my wagon tomorrow. Im excited to finally have the new 461 done and going into the car. It only took 2 years and I thought it was going to take another 2, thats why I went out and bought the motor Im selling. But now that the one I built for the car is complete, there's no need for one I purchased.

We could have predicted that. Why else would someone grind the letters off?

I could easily have forgotten something done to an engine years earlier.

Not to inteionally screw a buyer.

I have a '68 400 which I tore down, found worn, and reassembled hand tight with no rings, because it's just a core to rebuild,

OTOH, I once got a 350 in a trade deal.

Put it up for sale. Appeared to be rebuilt, asked $600 for the long block.

Buyer shows up and hems an haws about what's been done, who did it, blah blah blah... #6 heads. Worth the asking price if rebuilt.

Pull a valve cover, looks freshly rebuilt.
Buyer hems and haws some more.
Look, I says, we can pull a head if you like.
OK he says.
Pull a head, find 030 pistons brand new never fired.
buyer hesitates some more.
Over $600.

At that point I was looking at $2000 in parts and labor I was selling for $600 so I said well at this point sir I better start seeing some cash 'cause I am about to call it Not For Sale at $600. Even if you have to tear it down 100% and throw a new gasket set at it, it's a bargain.

Buyer decided that was probably good idea and whipped out the payment.

As far as I know everything worked out great.

Tony's reputation is top notch. I've met Tony in person, I've done deals with Tony AND I've even been middle man in hauling parts for him. I'd run this motor in a heartbeat if I was in the market for one.... BUT with the J heads on it, I'd have to try and negotiate a little.

What kind of horsepower are we realistically looking at from this engine as is? Can someone explain the J heads and why they're less desirable. Does it have to do with emission control and having more restriction?

With the exception of the V code cars in 1973 & 1974 that received the Ka heads.

After removing the pan, the motor was exactly what it was believed to be, all rebuilt with new components inside, and is now SOLD.
