Get your Gauge or Stereo Housing in time for summer

This is an old ad but the information is current as of 03-03-2023.

Great Spring Project !!!

Want a cd player in your Cutlass but don't want to cut your perfect dash?
Or maybe you'd like some gauges that appear "factory" installed.

These 68-72 Cutlass 442 Gauge / Stereo Housings are based on the 68-72 Cutlass 8 track tape player housing.

Absolutely NO cutting of your dash radio opening is required.

Choose a gauge or stereo housing made to your preference using the following list of choices for just $89.95 plus shipping.

Choice of three 2 1/16" holes, three 2 5/8" holes, stereo/cd opening or solid face with no holes so the buyer can layout their own design.
Choice of black textured face, 69/70 Olds Burlewood woodgrain, 71 Olds Walnut woodgrain or 72 Olds Rosewood woodgrain.

All housings come with chrome edge trim which matches the chrome bead on the dash of the 442 and supreme models.

Just email w70442@hotmail.com to place an order.
Please include the details/choices of what kind of housing you would like.

This housing mounts under the dash where the factory 8 track player would normally mount providing a more “factory” appearing installation of after market gauges*. Because it uses the exact same mounting holes as a factory 8 track, you don't have to worry about putting NON factory holes in the dash should you ever decide to sell your car.

The gauge housing can accommodate three 2 1/16" gauges or three 2 5/8” gauges.

The stereo housing can accommodate a standard Single DIN stereo. Current standard DIN stereo size is 2" X 7 3/16".

With most gauges, there's also room to “stash” a small stereo amp(or whatever) in the housing along with the gauges*.

I also repair broken 68-72 Olds plastic 8 track housings. Email w70442@hotmail.com for more information on that service.

Installation

The gauge housing is a direct bolt in for 70-72 Olds A body cars that previously had a factory 8 track player.

70-72 Cutlass’ that have never had an 8 track will need two 3/32" pilot holes drilled just as if you were installing a factory 8 track player.

68/69 Cutlass’ may need two 3/8" holes drilled in the same locations that were prepunched in the 70-72’s and two 3/32" pilot holes. I will provide dimensions/locations upon request.

70-72 cars with A/C will need the lower A/C duct/valance cut just as if you were adding a factory 8 track. I will provide dimensions for cutting the vent upon request.

Payment and Shipping

Paypal and money orders preferred. Personal checks will have to clear (10 business days)before shipping. Will ship to USA and Canada. Buyer pays $30 UPS ground shipping inside the continental US w/ FREE insurance. UPS will _not_ deliver to PO Boxes. Shipping via USPS is $30 plus insurance if requested. Shipping to Canada is actual USPS 1st class international plus insurance if requested. Please send payment within 7 business days. Allow 3 weeks from receipt of payment for delivery.
Items located in Louisville, KY. Local pick up available.

Please provide the diameter of your gauges or stereo dimensions, trim color preference and wood grain style.

I also build "custom" housings that can combine a stereo and gauges or just about whatever you come up with. Custom housings start at $109. Final cost of a "custom" housing depends on the complexity of the design plus actual shipping.

Below are of some of the standard versions available. Email w70442@hotmail.com for a pic of a version that you'd like if it's not shown here.

*Gauges and stereo are shown for display only and are not included.

The pic below is a custom housing but shows the current 69/70 Burlwood grain.

I recommend, love mine. For $60, I didn't mind drilling the bottom to add a mount for my satellite radio and for a reliable 12V outlet.....

Boldsmobile,
Sure thing. What size are those gauges? And are those the only two you'll be using? Any chance you'll add a third? Feel free to email me at w70442@hotmail.com and we'll get it all worked out.
Thanks,
Randy

I wonder how this would look in my delta 88. It looks like these grains are all lighter, here is what the delta dash looks like https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...-assembly.html

In the close up pic of the radio, the wood grain around the radio looks like 72 Rosewood while the rest of the wood grain on the dash itself looks like 71 Walnut.

I can mail you a small sample of each if you'd like. Just email your shipping address to w70442@hotmail.com

Very, very nice stuff. I'm happy with my setup but I would go with yours if it was a color green I could live with. Can you do that?

Hi,

Thank you for the compliment.
The housings come standard in black. However, SEM makes a very good spray can paint/vinyl dye that I usually use. I don't stock paints as there are just too many colors. So once we figure out what SEM color code you'd like, I would go and buy it and paint the housing for you for $20. That includes the cost (~$14 ) of the paint.

Nice looking interior. Those look to be 2 5/8" gauges.

Be glad to help if I can,
Randy

Hey Bry,

Shoot me a pic of your old school stereo and I'll see what it will take to build a housing for it.

Hey Troy,

I haven't but it doesn't sound like it would be a problem as long as the usb has some sort of bezel/trim ring. Do you have any pics you can post or send me of one you have in mind?

Interested in a 2-1/16 panel in the '72 Cutlass woodgrain trim pattern

I have a factory a/c car so I'd also need your cutting pattern info for the under-dash vent panel

thanks

No pics just an idea, wondered if you had any examples. I am thinking of having an am/fm unit converted into modern internals and was thinking it might be a good place to access with the gauges.

Hey Troy.

I found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/us-seller-DA...-/122015822226 flush mount round usb on ebay for about $15. It has a usb and aux input and has a two meter cable. The required hole is 1" to give you an idea of the overall size.

This is the style I would need to use as it would just require drilling/routing a hole in the face plate. A rectangular or square usb port would be very difficult to mount given that the ones I've seen don't have much if any trim ring or bezel. Besides being very difficult to cut a perfectly square opening, there is usually nothing to lock those in place. The round ones have a nut that screws on from the rear. Most round ones I saw had rubber caps that snap over the port to seal it off when not in use but you may be able to exclude the cap if you don't want it. If nothing else, you could cut the cap off at the strap.
I would cut the opening in the location requested by the buyer but it would be best if the customer provided the usb. That way, they could choose the type and quality port that they to suit their needs.
Here's the location I was thinking of installing it. The white circle in the pic. Let me know what you think.

Here's a picture of my stereo . It seems that it's somewhat consistent with today's stereo's perhaps , in case I want to upgrade ? The dimensions are 2-1/4 x 7-1/4 . this is the dimension of the edge to edge sheet metal flange . The stereo base not counting the flange that sticks out is 2 inches x 7-1/8 inches . I think the last dimensions I gave you would be the one you need so it fits tight against the hole that would be cut ....

Hey Bry,

I replied to your email but haven't heard from you so I thought I'd post here.

That looks to be a standard single DIN stereo so a standard stereo housing would work just fine for you.
Hollar when you're ready,

Hi Bryan,

What year is your car? EDIT>I looked at some of your posts and saw that you have a 72 CS so the 72 Rosewood would be the one you want.

The three wood grains I have match the original 69-72 Olds wood grains pretty well. I have seen some original dash wood grain fade from the sun making them look a little lighter or, as in the case of the 72 rosewood, loosing some of the red hue making them look more brown.

Also, differences in pc monitors may account for slightly different perceptions of the colors of the wood grain pics.

I can mail a sample if you'd like.

Whatever you think is the closest match would be good enough for me . You are correct , my car is a 72 CS . I should be ready to order in around a month . Thanks

If someone can post a clear pic of their 75 dash or email it to me at w70442@hotmail.com, I'll see what it would take to do do one.

A pic from the front and one from below showing the surface to which it would mount would be great. The current housings are approx 12" wide, 4" tall and 7" deep. It would also be good to know how much room there is where it would most likely need to go.
Be glad to help if I can,
Randy

Randy, FYI ... There's a neater looking USB extension port available that I've used in a few vehicles if you do any more with a USB outlet. (It also has an optional rubber cover.)
