I searched for the correct color for my 69 442 grill paing, I found Krylon Dull Aluminum for the silver part what about the black?
Semi Gloss black from some pictures I've seen but on ROP I saw Flat Black.

Also I saw a thread on repairing the plastic tabs, anyone have any other suggestions?

I fixed my tabs with a plastic repair kit from NAPA, worked good I filled some cracks with BONDO and it worked pretty good as well.
I have discovered the Krylon Dull Aluminum is hard to find but still shows on the internet. Anyone have any suggestions on the black? Semi gloss or Flat?

Use a Semi Flat Black (such as Krylon Semi Flat Black) or possibly a Satin Black. Flat is TOO flat and Semigloss's are too glossy IMO.

I had a small missing section of my 442 grille and used a piece of that plastic that almost everything is packaged in today as a backer and glued it with plastic epoxy. Once hardened I finshed off with body fill and / or spot putty as a final finish. Turns out great. The dull aluminum by Krylon is now under their "Metallics" line - part # 41403. The semi-flat by Krylon is defintely the way to go. I can't find the regular SF locally, only the "Rust Tough" SF, part #49203, but it is still the same sheen.

thanks for the post para...I just got some of the 1403 dull aluminum for my tailights a test spray showed a very acceptable color match to the original and a perfect sheen. Even my wife (who by all standards is hard to impress with car parts) was impressed

BTW ordered the 1403 on Amazon and the order was fulfilled by the local hardware store (doh)

ACE Hardware Stores have the Krylon Dull Aluminum 1403 & Satim Black on their shelf. If not they can order it.

I had a serious issue with the grille of my 64 olds 88. I took the car for a quick oil change
last spring. The tech also decided to check my tranny fluid. When he did he walked to the front of the car and dripped the fluid from the dip stick onto the dull aluminum paint on the grille and left spots. The spots came out looking like bright chrome. There must have been @ 20 spots and it looked stupid sooooo I proceeded to rub the entire grille area and wow it looks great.
I would not suggest everyone try it. I had no choice aside from repainting the grill and I wasn't in the mood for such detailed painting.

Instead of creating a new thread in regard to grilles and paint, I'm piggybacking off this one (now that the orignal post has been answered).

My question: did 1970 NOS Cutlass Supreme grilles come with silver paint on them?

They SHOULD have the silver paint on them (with some black accented areas) but being NOS you "never say never".....can't discount the chance of a set of unpainted "reject" grilles being put into the NOS inventory.

Great - thanks for the reply.

Have you seen sets with these blemishes along outer edge (nearest the headlamp housings)? They're almost like blisters in the plastic.

Does anyone have a side by side comparison with a nice factory grill and one painted with the dull aluminum? I can't find the paint. I may have to order it on the net.

I dont have a nice factory grill but I have a crappy before after w some 72 tailights this is using the krylon dull aluminum. it has a very nice sheen unlike most silver paints that look like well silver paint !

Retro the tail lights look great. After you painted them with the dull aluminum did you put any type of top coat on. I am wondering what type of durability the Krylon has.

I didn't use any top coat on them, but I too wondered about the durability as it is an interior rated paint. So far no issues, it's only been about2 years 2500 miles. My car isn't a daily driver, it spends it's off time in the garage and to be honest the harshest treatment those tai lights see is an occasional washing. So all that said I would do them again w the dull aluminum paint.

A grill may be tougher on the paint as they could see road debris, bugs etc and need more scrubbing to clean. I plan to do some grill work is summer so I will find that out as well.

I don't know. A clear May yellow w uv exposure, I cleared some back up lamp housings I redid and the satin clear had a little to much gloss in it for my tastes, but I did it to keep the brass socket from oxidizing so it still serves that purpose and it isn't really easily visible.

I got a can of the the 1403 from amazon and when I got it i read that it is interior paint. I found that motorcitysupercars on ebay sells a Grill, headlight and A rally wheel paint that is an exact match. I used it to paint the grill insert on my 67 cutlass and was more than happy with the final product. I am away on business but will snap a few pictures of the final product and post if interested. I feel that this paint is more durable then the 1403 since it is an interior paint, but the is just my opinion.

No problem Retro. I will try to get some up tomorrow night or Saturday. I will also take pictures of both paint samples next to each other for comparison. They were almost identical. Again I went with the detail paint thinking it would be more durable.

Sorry for the delay in posting these pictures. The first two show the grill insert all painted with the detail paint I purchased from Motor City. The third shot is the grill insert with a piece of card board that I painted right half with the detail paint and the left half is the Krylon 1403. They are almost identical in appearance. How did you guys prep them looking at touching up a Rallye 350 grill set one is oem stock other a cutlass that i got to replace the broke one . sand with what grit ? clean with ? Thanks
