I went to Lincoln Tech in Indiana back in the 70s, and worked as a mechanic in a service station in Indianapolis for a few years. Anyone remember May's Marathon at 30th and Cold Spring Rd? After that, I got a degree in electrical engineering, and been hard at that for 20some years. Got married and raised a family somewhere in there too.
I've lived in the southwest (Phoenix and San Diego) most of my adult life, but moved to the heartland (MN) a few years back and absolutely love it. I've only been reading this forum for about a week, but I have to say I think everyone should be congratulated for their civility and supportiveness. As we all know, many forums like this degenerate over time, but this seems like a very good community.

I'm in my first year of commercial aviation courses, nearly have my private pilots license at the University of North Daktoa. Last year I took generals at a different college. Aviation really sucks alot of time out of my day taking a full load of classes, flying at random times anywhere from 6 am to 11 pm. I can't really get a job with a schedule like that so my fun with vehicles and other stuff is kind of kept to a minimum.
Last year I got a an '81 bronco that treated me well, but I've since got an '84 bronco that I've modified a little bit with things that are cheap to do. I got a set of 35" mud terrain tires, rims with less backspacing, removed the sway bar, did a custom ignition setup, cut the fenders, installed recovery points, and lots of little things like adding a mechanical oil pressure gauge, gutting rear carpet, etc. So, I've had alot of fun messing around with that to keep from getting too stressed out with aviation stuff. I basically have no money so it's use is limited and unfortunately I can't really start work on my '77 cutlass, which has been in storage for quite a few years now. I have pretty big plans for the car and don't really want to mess it up by taking the cheap way out and bondoing holes and taking other shortcuts.. Other than that... I play PC games, ride BMX bike and do whatever else I feel like. I feel like I've told you my whole life story, but hopefully someone has something in common with what I do. ![]() |

I have been into muscle cars ever since I was in high school. I graduated from high school in 1999 and went straight to work in the construction field with my father. After about 3 years doing hard labor I found it was not for me. Now Im buying homes in need of repair (cheap) and selling them for profits. It's worked for me, and it's the quickest way to make some money. Im 27 years old now. Within the past 2 years I have owned a 68 mustang fastback, 66 mustang coupe, a 70 gto, 78 pontiac trans am, and now which I am currently working on a 72 Cutlass S. I just love old cars and old trucks.

Dave and Tex, even though both of you have been here a while, welcome to you both. It is good to see two younger guys that are interested in the older cars. I like the muscle car era but recently am interested in the older "hot rods". NOT street rods, can't afford those. Dave, I bought a beautiful stock, low mileage 77 Cutlass with a 350/350 combo and promptly lost it to thieves the next month. One of my bigger heartbreaks in my life. I never saw it again...Tex, I owned a 71 Cutlass when I was your age and beat the holy crap out of it, couldn't blow it up and I know I redlined it way too much. Those small blocks are tuff stuff!

I figure I should join in with this thread;
I'm a student at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. I also work at Lexus of Jacksonville. Anyways I own a beautiful 1955 Olds 88 Holiday Coupe with the orange and grey interior & the white and black exterior. My grandfather gave it too me a few weeks before he passed away. I have always loved that car, and even talked him out of selling it at one point. It only has 49,400 original miles on it and runs great. I'm also greatful to find this site that way im not under the hood in the dark. -todd |

This is to daverbmxer. Getting into an aviation career weather it be flying or fixin' is a good thing. Not only is it fun, but rewarding. Don't look forward to getting rich, though. My mother taught me the basics of flying starting when I was 8. I took ground school at 15 and soloed at 16. I entered the Air Force and got the job I wanted...airframe repair. When I got out of the AF I worked at a small airport working on civilian aircraft while doing odd jobs in exchange for flying time. I would tool around on my lunch hour over the lakes. Don't let it get to be such a burden as to where it is not fun any more.
By the way, the AF GI bill paid for my college where I was able to earn an AA degree and a BA in education. I am now on a VA disability and am trying to keep an old 1984 Delta 88 together. |

Lots of guys got their AF and PP license while they were in when I was in the Naval Aviation. It is really a good advantage.

I have been an olds fan for as long as I could drive, mainly because everyone always had a camaro, chevell or mustang. I just liked the look of the cutlass (it was a little different) I am an aircraft mechanic but have always worked on cars. I have had a 79,88,two72's 71 cutlasses and a 99 intrigue. I had a 72 442 conv, sold it to a guy in oklahoma ( i regret ever doing so) but now I have a nice 71 cutlass supreme conv. Itdoesn't need much it only has 66000 miles. I have rebuilt the suspension and stearing and she drive great. I love working on these cars and this site helps me alot. I hope I can help some people out too

I am 21 and my olds is the only car Ive ever driven and worked on. I am a college student so everything ive done is on a limited budget. All my car audio was wired by me. Also put fog lamps on my car and have done other cheap mods which helped the car.

New member thanks
I'm a new member and a devoted Olds enthusiast. First vehicle purchase was an Olds Cutlass Supreme "73" with the landau top. I currently own a slightly modified 1967 Cutlass convertible with 54,000 original miles. Glad to be a member here.
I'm a 28 year dental technician by trade, as well as a 20 year certified engine repair guy. I'll post some photos and contribute any knowledge I can offer. Thanks Oldsguy and Classic Oldsmobile. |

Hey guys, and gals.
New to this (or any) forum. Alway been an Olds fan! Dad had a few, I've owned a few newer ones. I was looking for a convertible mid to late sixties, Cutlass or Skylark, but could not find anything that I could drive home and still keep all arms and legs. Three weeks ago I came across a small classified ad for a Dynamic 88. I wasn't that familiar with that model. A quick Google brought up an ad for a '65 about an hour away. Needless to say I fell in love and four hours later, I owned it. Haven't done much to it so far, but will need some TLC. I have put about 300 miles on, with little trouble, and a lot of smiles from our four small kids. Hello to all and thanks in advance for the help! Mike from Ontario |

My first car was my mother's rusty 72 cutlass supreme that I was working on before I could drive. Once I got my license I drove that car everywhere. I got bit by the Olds bug and have never recovered. I worked on cars after Highschool but doing it for a living was not as fun as a hobby. I worked construction and bartended. I then went to college for an Aviation Science degree. Cars went to the back burner for years while I spent all my time and money learning to fly airplanes. I earned my Private, commercial, instrument, multi engine, CFI, CFII and ATP to anybody who knows. I had a dream of doing something I love and making a lot of money while doing it. That only turned out to be half true. I never broke into the major Airlines but got as far American Eagle where I was first officer on their regional jet (nice airplane). I was working for about 10 mos. on the pace to make about $21,000/yr when on my day off I got up one tues. morning and watched those planes crash into the WTC. The whole world changed and my future along with everyone else's would never be the same. I was told I would have to take a pay cut. I worked for about 2 more mos. and quit. I could do almost anything and make more money than the Airlines were going to pay. I was getting married and had to buy a house and think about kids. I went back to const. and have been doing that since. I don't want to discourage anyone from getting into the Aviation industry but some people (including myself) have or had preconcieved notions of what it is all about. I found it is not all it's cracked up to be. Anyway I could go on but this is an Olds forum.
Since my mom's car I have owned numerous Oldsmobiles, 71,72 cutlass, cutlass supremes, 70 442 Indy Pace car worked on all of them. I now own a 71 442 conv. from AZ. and a 71 cutlass supreme conv. which I just did my first frame on resto (lot of fun) rebuilt engine(455), new 1/4's, fenders, trunk floor, interior, bumpers and paint. I have a decent amount of money invested in the car which I could hopefully get back. My labor has been 1-3 days a week since last Aug. which I will consider a learning experience which I did enjoy. The car is looking pretty nice now and I will post some pix asap. I really enjoy this site and find it and other Olds sites a wealth of information and knowledge. Thanks to all. There's just something about an Oldsmobile. |

Scrappie, I think there are many of us that thought we had the world by the tail when we were young and eventually grew up to realize the truth. I know I was one of those too. Sounds like you have a nice car now, we are looking forward to some pictures.
Tedd, '55's are beautiful cars, one of the nicest years for Oldsmobile and it looks like that red/white combo is killer! Nice.

My first car was a 74 duster which never made it to the road, My second car(age 17) was a 66 impala 2dr Ht with a 327 vette motor .My love for old cars has never stopped, Ive never been a guy to follow a certain brand of car, just the body styles i love. Currently I have a 64 cutlass i building, I also have a 71 duster race/street car , and a 70 cougar Race car that im putting together then ill be selling to pay some of the bills that the olds is making with the credit card .lol .I took auto in Hs, but the training is pretty limited, I know a little about both body and mechanical, and if i cant do it, ill get a buddy to come over and give me a hand, especially the ones that work for beer and pizza

I have been in the industrail maintenance field for about 40 years and am presently working in a food processing operation ( meatballs ) My oldest son bought a 72 Supreme when he turned 17 and we have been a Olds family ever since with his younger brother (2nd oldest ) buying a 72 S for his first car and then my name sake buying the Supreme from the oldest. My youngest son found a 72 Supreme that only had 52,000 miles on it but needed some body and interior work and at that time I was driving my 2nd son's 72 S that he had bestowed on me. He liked the body style on the S more then the Supreme and to make a long story short we swaped. I have had the Supreme ever since and it only has 64,000+ miles on it after 16 years. We have had numerous parts cars and drivers with the newest for my youngest is a 68 F-85 roller from Arizonia via Utah. We are doing some research on it because it has the -- on the paint and trim tag. We have found out what the color is and will be get the GM Historic center involve to find out all we can about it. He and I both work on our own cars and naturaly help each other as much as possible. There are a few Oldsmobile guys around South Jersey but not enough.
Doug.

I have never worked in the automotive field but had a small auto salvage years ago when I should have horded more parts than I did. I have been into all sorts of classics since I was.....well bfore I could drive. My first car was a 63 Belvadere wagon and sold & doubled my money before I got my licence to drive it. My first was a 69 Impala. I got my 70 R/T Charger when I was still in high school. I still got it and am in the process of a rotissorie resto on it as we speak. I got into Oldsmobiles in the mid eighty's. We drove the 78-79 models for years till we wore them out and couldn't find them anymore. I got lucky and picked up my 70 Cutlass Supreme 12 years ago when a kid crashed it and it sat in the autoshop at the high school. They couldn't find the parts and I got it for 250 bucks and I just happend to run on to another Cutlass that got t-bonned for a 100 bucks and swapped the clip on it and drove it for a few years and just got done restoring it last year. My pics are on this site under Cutlass. Im pretty proud of it since I only am into it for 6K. I also picked up my 68 Cutlass vert that has sit inside a garage since 76 when a little ole lady passed away. Got a great deal on it too. It will get it's turn after the Charger is done....if i have any funds left. I know this is a Olds site but I love all old cars and have a few others as well. If anyone is into Chargers check out my reso page http://1970chargerregistry.com/70mes...917&highlight=

i'm a retired mechanical engineer. i worked for GE in the power systems division until i was told i was being sent to Bagdad in 2002. I was told i would only be there a few months. I was to oversee the power plant reconstruction to get the electricity back to the city. i knew better than to think it would only be a few months and took an early retirement. i have always worked on all my own cars doing everything even rebuilding my automatic transmission myself. My car i had as a senior in high school was a 69 Hurst/Olds. Guess i should have kept that one.

Domestic Goddess
Hi everyone! I currently have 2 jobs #1 being mom to my 2 daughters ages 12 and 7 (loveing the pre-teen yrs.
) When the girls are in school I spend my days working with/for my best friend and husband of 16years, Robert. We own our little residential electrical company and wire new houses, pretty much for one local builder. My title is office manager, because I do all the paper work, however, I do go into the houses and pull wire, cut in outlets, land switches and hang light fixtures. If you are wondering how I can work for my husband?...well, he is my best friend and apparently I take direction well as I do the work exactly as he had trained me ! I've lived my entire life in Indiana and have never crossed the Mississippi, something I would like to change. I grew up on the southside of Indy and the first car I drove was '72 Cutlass 442/455rocket. Wish I had the money to buy it from dad in '91 when he sold it for around $500! I did spend a lot of time in the garage working on it with him, probably why I couldn't cook when I first got married We currently live on the westside of Indy, just 10 short miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and an even shorter distance to O'Reily Raceway Park, formorly known as IRP. We can hear the Top Fuel cars from here during the Nationals...sweet! My "Baby" was a birthday gift from my hubby. All the guys we know say he did it to make them look bad. Thankfully she needs very little to make her a #2 driver and most important..NO body work! Still trying to find some local Olds lovers, may have to start my own club! I know they exist, the first night we had "Baby" we got an offer to buy. See ya around the forum! |

dont know how I missed this thread
Hi, All, I am a 45 year old airplane mechanic living in Columbus Mississippi. I've been on the site for about two months now and JUST noticed this thread. I enjoy the site, especially learning from the old threads. I own four antique Oldsmobiles, '53 88, 55 98, '56 Holiday 88, and a '56 S-88 convertible. ALL of these cars belonged to my Dad, who, sadly, passed away in April of '05. Dad LOVED Oldsmobiles. (He used to say "only half jokingly" that I was concieved in the '56 drop-top). Anyway, after staring at these cars with a beer in my hand and a tear in my eye for about a year, I decided it was time to get to work. So get to work I did, See Ya Round The Site,
Jeff P.S. Now I LOVE the damn things, too! |

Both my grandads were Detroit auto men. One a machinist with AC spark plug, the other worked in dealerships, mostly Chevrolet. My dad was a Detroit kid, went into the Navy, worked around Detroit in the car business, then on to GMI. About this time I was born, in Detroit, & shortly after he went to work for Oldsmobile. ALL of my growing up years were surrounded by new and cool Chevys and Olds. Cruising around Detroit with my grandads, aunts, uncles was, as they say nowadays, the bomb!
As a company man, my dad brought home a new Olds about once a month. I saw and smelled a lot of that GM manufacture. For my 16th birthday I got a 1-owner '64 Cutlass. I drove it in high school, parked it in college, then gave it a new paint job and drove it through the 1st part of my career. Then I got married, and the Cutlass and all those young man memories sat for 18 years. In '04 I started restoring her. She'd always been deluxe, and pretty much complete. Being a Montana car, rust and pitting issues are non-existent, she shines nicely under the Big Sky. The restoration has gone well. I was able to take my time to pay attention to minute details, which hopefully will pay off in the long run through great looks and eliability. I am probably 96% done with my Cutlass. So I have had only the pleasure of the restoration, not yet the pleasure of driving. Hopefully it won't be anti-climactic. I learned a lot, I am technically trained (engineer, scientist). My dad is still in cars, doing restoration trim and interiors. He's the best, knows more about cars than anyone I know. He's got a '66 Toronado about 65% done that is next to come on line .One of my best car memories growing up was when we took a family trip to California. My dad ordered a new '67 Toro for the trip (those good old days at GM). I was 7. When we got to Nevada, right after swimming in the Great Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, we came to Nevada, where the speed limit was unlimited. I remember my older brother and I watching the speedometer barrel roll over the top, and sit at 15 all across Nevada. Our mom was freaked, but we boys loved it. C heck me on this ... I think that was an extended 145 miles per hour. Anyway, we made quick time to Reno, in a car that was waaaay cool. That's my Olds gig. How 'bout yours?

hello everyone, thought i'd introduce myself. Here goes. I'm a CNC/Manual Machinist for a small Aerospace Machine Shop here in Sunny Phoenix, Arizona. Dad is a retired machinist of 45 years, and has been around cars all of his life - at one time owning a 1966 4-4-2 post coupe!
Last year I bought a 1967 4-4-2 Holiday Coupe. It's complete, driveable with the numbers matching 400 BB motor, M21 4speed and a special 4.33 geared posi rearend that was a special order from the dealer by the original owner. The car runs, quite well after having the motor rebuilt, tranny gone through and new brakes installed. I rescued it from a gentleman in TN, and the car is in need of the other parts of restoration, including interior work/dash restoration, body work ( rust repair o'plenty) etc.. I'm excited to learn how to do body work, etc.. as I want to restore the car myself so joining the forum will be a huge plus for asking questions. Thanks, John Tenney a.k.a desert442 Phoenix, AZ |

Wow, alot of aviation experience here.
I'm actually kinda ashamed to say how I got interested in cars. First off, its all self-done. No one in my immediate family or my circle of friends had anything CLOSE to a classic car. I was more into aviation as a youngin and I didn't start getting into cars until...sigh...the movies Fast & Furious and Gone in 60 Seconds (Cage) came out. I KNOW I KNOW I hear your groans! Horrible car movies! But the sound, the smooth metal, the freedom, got the fire lit. So since then I've been dying to find a classic car in my price range. Scouted the streets, the classifieds, nothing I could afford. In the meantime, I went to Univ of Cincinnati, got my Aero Eng BS (no pun intended) and went into the Air Force. Got my wings in July of 06 from Ft Rucker, stationed in Vegas now flying God's Helo, the HH-60 Pavehawk. I was searching for cars the entire time, mainly in garages and behind fences as I walked to class. Found a 67 Cutlass right next to my buddy's apt in college and a 67 442 in Abq when I was training in the Hawk. To be honest wasn't that interested in Oldsmobiles. Liked the lines but didn't see them anywhere for sale so didn't pay attention. None at car shows or anything. I was in Vegas for a MONTH, flippin thru Craigslist and saw a listing for a 68 442. Clicked, and no pics! I was perturbed and emailed the guy asking to see it (just cause I'd never seen a 68 in person). Well, one thing led to another and I end up going by to see it cause the pics wouldn't work. Thought the car was UGLY, haha. I liked the 72's more. But the more and more I thought of it, it grew on me, and so did the price. So I finally gave in and bought my first classic car. Hope to have it running when I get home. Other cars, 04 Dodge Ram, 91 Civic. Most of my meeger mx experience came from my 87 S-10 4-banger breaking every week in HS and College. My folks had a 94 Cutlass Supreme but it was a basket case from OH winters. Got rid of it a few months ago. |
