Dissasemble the engine without tranny, question

Wondering how you guys do when you take out the engine when let the tranny stay in car, do you disasemble the engine Mount from block to get it easyer out from the tranny house, or loosen the motormount bracket from frame, or motormount from bracket only?

To me it looks like a problem if only i should loosen the motor Mount from brackets, cause i guess the engine have to go a little forwards before its outside the tranny house and can lift the engine up?

I have dissasemble all bolts now but not the motormount bolts cause i want to hear what you recomand.

Another thing, should i find a block to have under the tranny Pan so it will not fall down when engine goes out?

B body olds btw
Thanks.

There is a bolt between the engine mount and the frame mount. Undo that bolt and nut and remove it on both sides.
Have the transmission and converter unbolted from the engine and put a jack under the pan. Preferably on a block of wood to spread the load across the pan. You can loosen the transmission cross member to transmission mount bolts but don't remove them yet.
Start lifting the engine and once it clears the frame mounts you can slide it forward freeing it from the transmission. Be sure to jack the transmission up as you go. It's only about and inch or so up that you have to go. Don't let the converter fall out.

I only loosen them so that you can raise the trans enough so that the engine will clear the frame mounts. Don't want to rip the trans mount. No need to stress it if you don't have to.

The torque convertor needs to be unbolted and stay with the trans. The engine an trans needs to come up about 2 inches to clear the motor mount, then us a pry bar in between the block and tran to separate.
