Opinion needed on dual exhaust tailpipes.

Hello all I put a stainless dual exhaust system from Pypes on my 1968 Cutlass S 350 engine. I bought the chrome trumpet tailpipe accessories and I'm wondering now if they will look silly seeing as I do not have the 442 rear bumper with the cut outs.

What do you think?

Also where would you end the exhaust?

Flush with the rear bumper, a little before the end of the bumper or a little past the rear bumper?

Suggestions and opinions appreciated.

Thanks Todd

I'd get a cut-out bumper for it or not use the tips

maybe u could return them and get the chrome square tips. and mount them right at the end of the bumper up tight.not against the bumper but very close theres a show called garage squad and they put the exhaust tips on a transam looked real nice.

I like the exhaust hidden on a bumper with no cutouts. I turn down the tailpipes just behind the rear bumper.

I was thinking the same thing about the trumpet tips, I think I'll sell them as I don't want to get a new bumper for it. I've seen the rectangular tips they look ok on some cars but just not my cup of tea, but I do appreciate the feedback. So right now the exhaust comes out past the rear bumper and I think it needs to be cut back, just not sure how far. I think I want them to show a little. Thoughts?

They look like they need at lease a couple inches cutoff.

Agreed but again flush with bumper, a little past or a little before flush.
OldCutlass do you have any pics of what you are describing?

Thanks again....T

Click on the pic I posted, you can barely see the exhaust pipes. If you go to a muffler shop and tell them to put turn downs right before the bumper, they will know what to do.

Could angle cut the end of pipe, leaving it longer on top.

I agree with trumpets with cutouts, or just turndowns below bumper. For my money, subtle is more impressive, unless a 442 with cutouts.

If you do turndowns, make sure they aren't tucked up too much. My tails are up next to the frame rail, totally hidden. But my turndown needs to be a couple inches longer, as right now it heats up the bumper and causes the chrome to discolor. Easy to polish off, but I'd rather not have to do so every few 100 miles.

Even laying on the floor, only half the pipe is visible.

I always liked a "turn down" just shy of the bumper. Helps keep the exhaust condensation from splatting back on your bumper too. I always felt exhaust, much like children, should be heard and not seen.....wait a minute...geez, I always get those wrong.

Good point here. Back in the day I remember seeing a lot of single exhaust '70-'72 cars with melted passenger side tail light lenses due to the tail pipe being a bit too short and the exhaust gases heating the bumper and tail lights. Not as much of an issue on the '68 as its tail lights are higher up on the bumper, but still something to be aware of.

Thank you so much every one for the input and the great picture Mr. Nick.
I think I am going to go with the turn down just before the rear bumper and make it a little longer as suggested and I believe seen in oldcutlass's pic.
I appreciate all the suggestions and help.
I'm going to go for my 1st ride in my 1968 Cutlass S since starting the restoration 6 1/2 yrs ago next Weekend. I'm like a ****** kid waitin for Christmas!!!

Mine are like Mr Nicks except they turn down right at the rear bumper. It does get a little film on the bumper over a few months, but cleans off easily.

I like slash cut and rolled exhaust tips sticking straight back just an inch or so past the bumper. Simple and classy

Seems to be an unpopular opinion in here haha, but here's what the trumpets would look like without the cutout bumper. I'm not sure how far past the bumper they stick.

I like that, its got a certain hoon/ badass element to it

I also like pipes on 45deg behind the rear wheels, but not coming down too far.

Hey Magna86 I know what you mean by slash cut but what do you mean by rolled? Do you have any pics?

DJS70cutlass thanks for the pic, now you have me re-thinking my decision. Do you have any more pics?
Maybe a pic straight on from the back? I'd really appreciate it if you do.

Best Todd

Thanks for the picture I really appreciate your time in doing this for me.
Does having the exhaust this way discolor your bumper?
I'm really not sure which way I want to go at all now lol.
I would think having the exhaust come a little past the rear bumper would eliminate the discoloring of the bumper.

Don't mention it! And no the discoloration isn't from the exhaust.......it's just rust from salt exposure. The left side is clean all the rust in on the right lol. It could be from the cars days with a single exhaust too I'm sure it would clean up with a little chrome polish but I'm super lazy haha!!!

Our car circle just had this conversation last week at our local cruze night. So many people get everything right until the exhaust termination. Everyone has their own taste and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Buuuuuttttt.....
So here is the consensus of a bunch of hombres from different car cultures, ages and tastes.

No cutouts in the bumper or valance; the factory down turned regular metal pipes look the best with the exception of the early 70 Camaros with the stupid angled pipes.

Cutouts then go for it. But do it right with the right distance off the cutout lip or valance.

Kind liken it to the 68 442s with the W36 stripe in the wrong spot and or the wrong stripe all together.

droldsmorland what would you suggest? Factory turned down pipes?

I kind of like the look of the exhaust coming straight out the back hugged up high to the bumper and maybe an in or so past the bumper but I'm thinking no chrome tips just the 2 - 1/2 in stainless pipe coming out the back. What do you guys think?
Be honest I can take it.

Sorry about my delayed response. On the rolled tip they take the end and roll it back into after they make the angled cut. Its a much cleaner look. I have them on my truck but don't have a pic so I found a pic online. You can buy them at any muffler shop in lengths from 6" to 18" maybe longer. The shop can cut your pipe back and the slide the tip over it slightly them weld them on. Just don't stick em out too far as it looks dumb and lazy.

Here's how mine are, no chrome discoloration problems here. When I had the dual exhaust installed back in the '80s, I added the slash-cut chrome extensions and always felt they stuck out more than I liked, but never took the time to cut the extensions to shorten them. I've got them pushed on as far as they'd go before they bump into the bend in the tailpipes. Oh well, works for me.

Thanks for the picture Johnny, great looking car! Who would have thought that deciding how to leave your tailpipes would have so many options and be such a huge decisions lol.

Did you ever think of cutting the bumper to make cut outs? Mine is that way. That is not a 442 bumper, is it Mr. Siltman?

Nice Car and a great color. Do you have a straight on look of that car from the back?

I ordered stainless slash cut 2 1/2" Pypes tailpipe tips which makes sense as my dual exhaust is from Pypes.
I will post pictures once I get them on and again thank you to everyone who gave me their opinions and suggestions I really appreciate it.
