Compressor Clutch Not Engaging

Quick question, would low freeon levels cause the clutch to not engage? The car hasn't had a recharge since 1997 I think.

Leakage of up to 1 pound of R12 per year was considered to be normal, as per the Chassis Service Manual.

So this means that, by 2016, the car will have lost 19 lbs of freon.

If I were the compressor clutch, I wouldn't engage, either.

On a more serious note, there is a detailed troubleshooting chart in the chassis service manual, and low freon charge is only one of several possible causes of the clutch failing to engage. It would probably be a good idea to follow that chart.

Well, there is that whole "diffusion across a gradient" thing, but, uh, yeah, sure, exactly.
