63 Cutlass transmission filter installation?

Hello all,
I found a replacement transmission filter and am attempting to replace it on my 63 Cutlass, (slim jim / hyrda-matic).
My question is;
How does the filter "clip" in?
The old filter was installed into the pick up hole w/ the o-ring, but it appears that it was just hanging there.

The Olds manual states: that you need to insert into the hole with the o-ring, then "clip" in place?
There was no clip on the old filter, nor did I find it loose in the pan.

Does anyone have any insight into this?
If I cant find a clip, would the filter be held in place well enough to get by?
Would it be held in place by the pan pushing up against it?

The filter is part number (AC-PF-153)
I've attached pictures of the original filter, along with a detail showing a wear spot on the filter where it looks like a clip might have been.

Also, what is the correct tranny fluid to use? The manual says to use GM Hydra-matic fluid type A, (with the additional designation of "AQ-ATF")?

On other posts, people have mentioned just using Dextron. Will this work ok?

Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Actually, it's a RotoHydramatic 5, used exclusively in the 1961-63 F-85 line.

I don't recall if mine had the clip or not. The filter actually sits on the bottom of the pan. The clip is just to keep it from falling out until the pan is put back on.

I put Dextron III in mine four years ago and with over 10,000 miles on it, there have been no problems.
