next question - what about my Hydramatic ?
Hi and thank you for reading
My Owners manual shows me the controls P-N-Dr-Lo-R for a "dynaflow" but I think I got a Hydramatic
Hydramatic controls are not to find in my Owners Manual ......
I see a N-Dr-S-Lo-R but .... what the hell is "S" standing for ?
Anyone here that could send me or show here what the Owners manual should tell me about my Hydramatic ?
I dont want to damage anything because of not knowing how to handle a Hydramatic ....

From the 1955 Oldsmobile owner manual
I have the owner manual for my 1955 Oldsmobile which also has the Hydra-matic. For drive range "S" it says:" 'S' position is for use when super performance is needed for hill climbing or increased acceleration in traffic, and for engine braking down hill. The selector lever can be moved between 'DR' and 'S' position at will under all operating conditions."
In the S position the transmission operates in the next lower range from the DR range. The front unit of the transmission operates in reduction (band on/clutch off) while the rear unit operates in direct drive (clutch on/band off).
If you are operating in the DR range below 65 MPH and you move the accelerator to the floor, the Hydra-matic will automatically shift to the S range.
Of course, fuel economy will decrease when the S range is used in place of DR.

In 1953 the Hydra-Matic factory was destroyed by fire. Oldsmobile, as well as Cadillac, adopted the Buick Dynaflow transmission for the rest of the year. until the Hydra-Matic plant could be rebuilt.
It's obvious that your car is equipped with a Hydra-Matic. However, the owners manual that you have was one from a car that had been equipped with a Dynaflow transmission.

thanks, ozzie !
my Olds was built in February 1953 says the title ;o)
Hydramatic Factory was on fire in August 1953, google says :-)
Maybe someone could post the 1953 - pages for my hydramatic, so I could replace them in the owners manual.
If not possible, I will take ozzies pages to put them into the OM

Another possibility would be to find the correct publication for your car. There are many book sellers which probably have it.

Yep, what Ozzie said. When using the "Super" range, the car will shift into 4th eventually, but not until about 65 mph, or so depending on how your bands are adjusted, and the condition of the trans. I shift between Drive and Super on a regular basis. It drives my wife crazy, because she does not understand it, and says it's not necessary. I use it like a manual to accelerate, and to downshift on highway off-ramps all the time. They are tough trannys, powerful enough for light Army tanks. They will take whatever you want from them. Drive them like they were intended.

one more question,
does it also shift later at 1-2-3 or just at - 4 ?
if yes, it's a real "sport" position ? LOL
wouldnt be a surprise, if you look at the pic ;-)

No, even in "Super" the 1-2-3 shifts are normal, and as you know, you're in 3rd by the time you reach about 15 mph. Super only delays the shift into 4th gear.
A Hydramatic is perfect for the Austrian Alps!!

Transmission in reverse (R) with the key off. This is the park mode for this era car and locks the transmission up like park does in a newer car. Also I pull the emergency brake just incase someone bumps the shift handle.... Tedd

thank you
btw, nearly 80mls/hr wasn't really a problem - that 98 seems to be in good condition over all

Yep, Put your foot on the brake, drop it into reverse, and then turn off the key. You should then hear a "click" as the trans locks into place.
What happened to your caps & wide whites?
That Olds looks like a giant next to the Opel!

the wide whites stayed in Arizona, were too old to be driven - former owner put those ones on her because I asked him ton replace the old ones
The caps sometimes decide to go a different way the car goes
So I am just trying to adjust them to stay at the wheel
when parking after the Rallye I made another pics about "size matters" here they are LOL

even the 76 Camaro nearly disappears behind the 98
