63 98 6 window help just got it

Im not new to fixing up old rides, just new to the olds cars..I have a 63 98 6 window model.394 skyrocket ultra high comp. The car is 100% original and un molested.Even all the original paper work was in the glove box.Motor runs like a dream with 53,000 actual miles.Solid body with only surface rust.Goes into gear solid but no shift out of 1st gear.It will drive and pull firm in first, when you let off the gas there is no engine braking unless its in low 1,if in drive no engine braking.Reverse works great also.Im guessing its a slimjim tranny.I hope its not shot,if it is.I will rebuild it.I want this car to be what it is,A very nice vintage car.Paint code is CCA anyone know what color that is?..For the 98 luvers out here..All options on this car work perfect, pwr windows, seat and trunk release..The Vin info on this ride is: 63-3829 Body BA 135 ,,, Trim 394 Paint CCA..Any info or tranny tips very welcome..

63-3829 should be a Luxury Sedan (4-door hardtop - front & rear fold down armrests). BA is the Doraville, Georgia Fisher Body plant code. 135 means it is the 135th Luxury Sedan built at that Fisher Body plant - it's an early car. CCA is the paint code for Provincial White, upper and lower, with Ebony Black wheels or painted deluxe wheel covers. I'm guessing the 394 trim is Fawn.

Thanks for the info..

Thanks..You are right..The delivery date in the coupon book and owners manual say oct of 1962 ...The hubcaps are painted and crome..One odd thing..The car does not have a side mirror and I have not seen holes to mount one..Could you get these without a side mirror in 62/63?...

That's right. A driver's side mirror was only standard on convertibles. It was optional on everything else.

Sounds like a vacuum line fell off or is cracked.

I* replaced a transmission when I* was 18...only
to find the new one did the same thing.
(stayed in first, and went limp when I* got off the gas)
It was a cracked vacuum line.

*never the smartest kid on the block

Howdy, Does that tranny have a modulator on the side the vacuum line goes to? I'm not real familiar with the slim-jim if it has that funky convertor. I had the same problem with a '68 Pontiac and it was just a bad modulator, could also be the line itself as mentioned, low tranny fluid or dirty filter, may make a difference if the vac line goes to full manifold vacuum or ported vacuum.

Just my 2 cents woof,

Allan

There is no vacuum modulator on the Slim Jim. In fact, there is no vacuum input into it of any kind.

Slim Jim shifting is governed by a TV rod which runs from the carburetor linkage all the way down to the transmission on the driver's side. The Slim Jim is exquisitely sensitive to adjustments in this linkage. If you don't have a service manual, pick one up ASAP & study the proper way to set up the carb & trans.

In the meantime, if you just want to mess around, try either shortening or lengthening the TV rod where it connects to the carb linkage. You should see it running up between the engine & the firewall. The rod attaches to the linkage with a yoke- take off the cotter pin & washer, then remove the big attaching pin. Be careful not to lose this pin or drop it under the intake manifold.

The yoke is adjustible & held in place with a jam nut. Back off the nut & rotate the yoke to shorten or lengthen the rod. Be sure to count how many times you turn it so you can put everything back the way you found it! Move the yoke 1/4 inch or so in or out & then try driving the car to see if anything's different. I think a longer TV length may result in a delayed 1-2 upshift, but I can't quite remember.

The Slim Jim is also very sensitive to fluid level. Check it with the car level, running, & hot.

There have been some extensive posts on the Slim Jim here. If you use the search feature you should be able to find them.

Good luck-

Chuck

Welcome to the website. There is alot of good info here. Ask questions and we will try to answer accurately.

BTW, does your car have the autronic eye? My 98 has one but unfortunately it doesn't work. I read in a JWO magazine that they are blinded by modern halogen bulbs.

Autronic Eyes/Guide-Matics couldn't deal with reflective highway signs. That's why they were discontinued in 1970, on everything but Cadillacs. Caddys located the eye in the grille so theirs weren't quite as vulnerable to sign reflection. Even though dash-mounted units' sensitivity could be adjusted, reflective signs would still send them crazy.

You may ask why the other Divisions didn't simply move the eye to the grille. It had become a slow selling option by 1966 and was generally dealer-installed after then.

That would explain why the one in my 64 Lincoln was always going crazy ! Oh well, the car was sold a long time ago.
