Which engine is it.

A friend on myspace (a young man 17-22 yrs old) has asked for help in id of his engine. He has a 87 Regince or however it's spelt. Myself a proud owner of a 71 442 convertable. and being older he has requested help.

His brother says it's a 307 but his dad says its a 350 I don't have many detail on the engine much less the car, but any suggestions would be appresheated.

the Vin code of the first 5 didgets is as follows. 163AW

But since I am not sure how to decode it it doesn't help me but I furguire some of you wizards will know something.

Thanks a lot.

Are you talking about a 1987 Olds 98 Regency? If so, that car is FWD and uses a transverse Buick V6. There were no V8 engines available. I would suggest his brother, dad, et al start by counting spark plugs. The EIGHTH digit of the VIN is the one that tells you what the engine is. I would suggest they use a little more care in reading the VIN, as the second character should be the letter "G" for General Motors, not the number 6.

The only V8 Oldsmobiles sold in 1987 were the Cutlass Supreme and the Custom Cruiser wagon. In both cases, the only available engine was the 307.
