1965 Olds 98

I am looking at a 1965 Olds 98 4 door and seen it today.Green with 45,000 actual miles on it having the original paint.Interior is clean inside with no rips or tears.I did have my mechanic with me and he said it looks good underneath with no leaks. The seller has a garage with a hoist, raised it up to check underneath.Same under the hood.Did drive it and drives nice.Learned it was his parents and they bought new in 1965.They never drove it in the winter time including fall. They both passed away this year and he decided to sell it.He wants a little too much and said he may take my offer.I love the car and is rust free too.

The day you go ga-ga over a car is the day you pay too much for a car. No matter we've all been there. Hope it works out!

Wants $30,000.00 for it and I did my research, seen them up to $25,000.00 in great shape.I offered $21,000.00 and going up to $23,000.00 which is my max.Told him cash too,no check. His brother is on my side on this, too high.Called me back and said he would take $23,000.00 with the shop manual and original paperwork when their parents bought it new.I am thinking saying yes and told him I will call him back tomorrow.

That's about three times what the car is worth, but it sounds like a really nice car, and if you like it that much, it's up to you.

Just remember that you will never get that much for it if you should ever decide to sell, barring a miracle.

Nice car, though...

Great! So long as you're happy, and you'll stay happy, that's all that matters.

Photos as soon as you can - we all want to see this car!

I agree it is a lot of money. But if it is in need of little work and you want it and have the cash you go for it. You only go around once.
If you are going to drive it regularly, I would suggest installing a dual master cylinder as a upgrade. Your choice, but it is a common and accepted upgrade.
So many big cars were scraped for their drivetrain and many others were used in demo derbys. Great to see another big girl saved, and another one in this site!

Glad to hear that you decided to buy the car. I am sure it's pristine. We look forward to seeing pics.

30000 dollars for a 65 98 4 door sedan? Don't do it. You will really regret it. The crazy seller is either way off on what he thinks the car is worth or he sees a sucker. You did not say what model the car is but since it's a sedan, it's either a base Town Sedan, yuck, a Holiday hardtop, ok, or the top line Luxury Sedan, very nice. Either way, it's a 10000 car tops if it's in showroom new condition. I love all Oldsmobiles with the big 98s being my top pick. I know them all too well so please hear me out. There are a few more mid 60's 98s floating around online now and none are over 10k. Even a convertible 98 in excellent condition can be bought for under 20k. Don't do it. Just wait because he will never find another buyer for 30k and his price will start to drop, when it does, go get the car. Do not worry about losing the car because at 30k, it's not going anywhere.

Herbie, if I recall, you're the guy with at least one exceptionally low mile original car, so you do know a great deal about low mile originals.

Maybe because the poster is female and I can be "old fashioned" in these discussions, maybe because she just came out on the good side of a very concerning health issue, and I feel she deserves whatever she wants, and maybe because I already used up my snark quota on someone else that day, I was far more easygoing in my response than I have been with some previous people in similar circumstances.

I stand by my easygoing response, but I also agree with everything in yours, and I hope she really enjoys the car.

x2

Heck yes! Plus, it's an Oldsmobile. Don't forget that. It might not be worth that much if it were a Lincoln or; God forbid, an Imperial.

I still feel big cars are undervalued. They will rise slowly, but the high dollar performance machines are out of site for most people. Some that put out the money for muscle will find that they are not so great to drive, not to mention their value is too much to risk taking out for cruises of any distance. And there is also the attention it will get just for being different. Personally I walk by a average muscle car with hardly a glance at a show. But to see a luxury boat is to see a lot of detail the factories did then.

Guys, I am the last person who would want to put a lower price on an Oldsmobile. However, 30000 thousand dollars for a 65 4 door 98? Did that figure really sink in? I love my 98s and I would guess I have the largest collections of Olds 98s, I must have 20 of them and almost all of them are from the 60s through the 80s. I wish the cars were worth 30g but they are not. I hate to see a misinformed person like this possible buyer get ripped off. Shame on this seller and it's our job to help this person not get screwed which is why they posted here in the first place right? Unless this person buys this car, the seller will keep it forever at that price. He will go down in price....

At $23k I would expect the car to be MINT!

FWIW, here are two of the most expensive 4 door Oldsmobiles I could find. They don't come near to $23k:

P.S. I'm not going to post a pic of my 71 98 because I don't want anyone's face to melt off of their skull like in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

We were as clear and plain as can be regarding the price and value - the agreed price is three times the value - and there's not much more we could say. All we can do now is to wish her well and hope that the car gives her an amount of enjoyment commensurate with whatever she finally pays for it.

In the end, if someone wants to pay a certain amount, it's up to them.
People donate similar amounts to cat shelters, or throw it over a bar or a blackjack table.
If it makes them happy, who am I to judge?
