I have a 1972 Oldmobile Cutlass that I am trying to remove the power steering pump. I can get everything removed except it is still attached to the steering arm and don't know how to remove.

Are you talking about the steering box?

The power steering pump is not mounted to the steering arm. It's mounted to the block on the DS in front of the #1 cylinder.

If it's the steering box, you need to remove the cotter pin from the castle nut on the end of the Pitman arm. Do NOT remove the Pitman arm. Once you have the cotter pin out, undo the castle nut and break the joint connection to the center link. (either a hammer blow, or a pickle fork). After that it's just 3 bolts through the frame that hold the steering gear in place (assuming you have already disconnected the pressure/return lines, and the rag joint connection)

One thing that will help you a LOT are the acquisitions of the 1972 Oldsmobile Chassis Service Manual, and the 72 Cutlass Assembly Manual. I recommend the original books simply because the quality of the images are significantly better than scans that are used for the aftermarket reproductions.

You can get free information on the Wild About Cars website too. Their images are scanned and some are fuzzy, but the information is accurate because it's from OEM GM Oldsmobile sources.

If you're interested, OEM copies (in decent shape) are always for sale on the web (usually eBay). You should be able to get decent pricing on shipping if the seller will send via 'book rate' on USPS.
