815's 1964 F85 Cutlass project

Looks like I have got myself into another project. I purchased this 1964 Cutlass last Saturday. I had been looking for a 64 or 65 for awhile, but I purchased a 1972 442 over the winter. I told myself I would concentrate on the 72, but when I located this 64 listed at a great price I couldn't resist. It seems I keep saving these Olds from Chevy transplants.

This one had a 355 Chevy and a four speed manual, but I negotiated with the PO to purchase this as a roller. I packed up the family, grabbed a trailer, and made a road trip to Walton, KS, just outside Wichita. The car is not perfect, but I am happy with it. I could not find one locally in decent shape, and the asking price for local 64's/65's were out of control.

So the 72 442 will get bumped down the lineup, while the 64 takes over at leadoff. I might get the 72 442 up and running, and sell it to help fund this current project. I'm not quite sure yet. I'm looking forward to any help from 64-65 Cutlass owners.

Congrats! Nice looking project. The console looks correct for the 1964-66 automatic floor shift cars.

Yes the quarter was repaired. I was told it had surface rust, and it was filled. The trunk needs some work, but nothing immediate. The PO threw in new full repo trunk pan, and braces. I was happy all the trim was there and in good shape. You are right on the money with the 455 power plant. I found my T. Patrick Sullivan Olds restoration guide, and the console belongs to automatic 442's 64-66.

Yes you are right. In 64 the 442 was only offered as 4 speed. I think what the book is saying is a 64 received this console if a was just a Cutlass with a automatic, but in 65-66 the console was used on automatic 442's. I guess in 64 the top panel was black, then white in 65, and back to black for 66.

Looks like a nice start, I love factory air cars, wish my car had the vacuum gauge instead of the tach. The tach location is pretty dumb on these cars. If the floor of the trunk is rusty check the back window, tail lights and the welds at the rear of the trunk opening where the quarters meet the rear valance for leaks, the only rust I found on my car was in the trunk and it was from all 3 things leaking.
I really like the console in the car that's snazzy.

Thanks guys

Yes, I agree with you on the location of the gauges. I don't think I will use the console though, unless I can use it with a aftermarket shifter. Thanks for the tips on the trunk area.

Thanks Rob

I'm hoping to have everything up and running by June hopefully sooner though. How's your build going BTW? Does anyone know if the Edelbrock Airgap manifold will clear the hood on 64?

Sounds like you are going to be busy. Mine is going pretty well. I have installed a new fuel system with an electric pump and 1/2" supply and return lines. The only down side is my engine is taking longer than expected. Hopefully it will be ready about the same time as yours but I'm not holding my breath.

Nice looking car. What all do you have planed for the car ?
It's great that you saved it from the chebby downhill trip.

It is an A/C car, and at least the dash has not be hacked up.
Some one may have a better dash pad, you could pick up.

A 455 is a pretty easy drop in, PM me if you want some info.

Got question for a 64 - 442 owner?

Hi Guys - I have a 64 -442 that I have owned since 69 or so and I'm getting it out of storage and rebuilding stuff as I find it. I need to fix an exhaust manifold and thought I would just replace both with a set of headers. But I can only see 65 model's listed. I always thought the 65 and 64 was the same under the hood since they both had 330 engines. Do you guys know if headers listed as fitting a 65 will fit a 64? or do you know a manufacture and part number that will fit the 64?

Thanks

Jeff

Jeff,

What engine are you going to use? If your sticking with a 330 then I believe your going to have to forgo headers. If u plan to rebuild and use the 330, your best bet is Thornton's 350 JR performance manifolds. Post some pictures of your ride when u get a chance.

Thanks for the come back!

Yep sticking with the 330, Pictures are in the album, just go to sixtyfour. I'll check the Thorton reference. But I still see some 65 references for headers, just wasn't sure after all of this time....getting old (Grin)

That is a great car to start on! Nice find! When I bought mine there was hardly no floors, braces or trunk! Got it about 5 years ago behind grannys house in Ohio, shipped it to Dallas. Mine is ending up as a 64 pro-touring car.The only part of the 64 chassis left is the frame and some of that was boxed. If you need any help with your build or not quite sure what to do let me know.

Jeff my motor is a big block 67 400E, it's the motor I'm using until I have the $$$ for the 425.They are Hooker Headers for BB Olds HCK-3902-1HKR $469.00 from Summitt. You will have check around for 330-350 SB headers. FYI-when ordering don't forget the collectors they are not included. BADABING/BADABOOM:

Very well done 64! It looks like your headers fit well. How much finagling did you have to do to clear things? I have a set of Hooker #3201-2, so any ideas of where to massage them to fit would be great. I'm looking at front rebuild kits as the ball joints are trash and I'm sure other items will need to be addressed and replaced.
What did u do for the rear end? Thanks

815Cutlass if you look up my thread in this section it gives you an idea of what actually has been done and in some detail, but to answer your question the rear end is a Moser, 9 inch 355 gear set with Trac-Loc clutch housing, 1310 series pinion yoke and 31 spline alloy axles, QA1 shocks, upper and lower trailing arms, rear drum brakes, mount braces, springs, and sway bar, are all Hotchkis. As far as the header fit on a SB 330 I don't know. BB 64-66 are the same. My Hookers fit without any massaging. I may say there some tips I can give you to make BB header installation easier but I do know about the 330. Just let me know this is fun

Guys, the initial plan is for a 500HP plus 425, perhaps with a turbo-600HP? Everything on the car was built to support it including the 200R4. As is, it's way overkill for the stock 400E. I also may race the car in some autocross courses.

If you put a 455 in then use my Hooker header part number I listed. Also Smitty is the forum has some Killer Headers for this application, higher quality and fit than Hooker. With the 455 in the engine cradle, remove the drivers side motor mount bolt, only loosen the pass side, it keeps the motor from totally coming out of both frame mounts when gently lifting the motor. It will tile to the drivers side this way. This is the only way the drivers side header will go in. Pass side non-AC is not an issue. AND- if you are using your GM starter make sure all the wires are attached and its installed first or your screwed. AND-only there is about 1/16 of an inch between the header tubes and the starter, so in the summer you will have some heat soak on the solenoid making occasional hard starts. In my 67 I have the same headers on my 461 with the great 4-field GM starter and she gets hot here in Dallas in July ( ya think) and when I need too just sit for a few minutes or ( M21) I let roll and start. Hope this helps over and out>
