installing a console in a 72 cutlass

In this pic, you can see the four dots where the mounting screws go into the hump on the trans tunnel.
There should be one or two screws (I can't recall exactly how many) in the front area of the the shifter mount.
There will be very slight dimples where holes need to be drilled.
The hole for the shifter cable is also a dimple, but may not line up perfectly with the way the cable will want to lay. Drill that hole using a step bit.
I have several others in my gallery that may help you in placing the console and shifter.

The red circles show where the shifter mounting 'dimples' should be, and the yellow is approximately where the shifter cable will go thru.

The 1972 Cutlass Assembly manual covers this too.
If you don't have one, they are incredibly cheap to buy. eg: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1972-Oldsmobi...3ca41e&vxp=mtr
If you don't have a 72 Oldsmobile Chassis Service Manual, I would invest in one of those too. I recommend an original manual even if it's a bit scuffed instead of the repops or electronic ones. The latter have poor quality reproduction scans of the photos whereas the original is crystal clear.
Don't forget the grommet around the shifter cable when you install it to that center console hole location.
