3 point rear belts in ´70 Cutlass Conv.

Hello everyone.

Question: Has anyone done this? 3 point rear seat belts in a 1970 Cutlass Convertible?
It has the 4 attachment point in the floor for lap belts.

Thanks

Søren

Rear seat shoulder belts were a rare factory option. The Fisher Body Manual shows where the attachment points are. Note that the factory shoulder belts were the "four point" style, just like the front belts. The shoulder belts used separate buckles from the lap belts, though the inboard belt ends were anchored at the same bolt on the floor.

Note to myself: Has to put Fisher body Manuel on the wishlist.

Thanks Joe. I could have been more clear. It doesn't have to be original belts, aftermarket or used out of a newer car would be just as good. Roll up belts even better.

I understand, but I still recommend the factory belts since the attach points are structurally designed for the load application at these points. It makes no sense to install belts if the anchor points can't survive the load.

I'm watching here, too. Was made to look into this by my wife - two child seats need to go on the rear bench this summer.

Now here in Germany most child seats are of the Isofix type:

While those seats are primarily fixed between seat and backrest, they require a 3 point belt for proper fixation.

My child seat experience dates to the late 1980s (my son is now 6' 4" and 250 lbs). Back then, car seats in the U.S. simply attached using the lap belts. I have no experience with modern child seats, but I can't imagine that an Isofix seat will work in an older car without the special anchoring points built into the seat. In any case, I would always prefer the non-inertia reel older style belts over those in a newer car. The fixed belts get adjusted once and that's it. The car seat doesn't move, the belts don't move, and it's as good as it gets. I suspect it's going to be very difficult to get one of these newer style seats to anchor properly in an older U.S. convertible, simply because there is no real structure to attach the top of the seat to in the back. Again, the best you'll likely be able to do is the factory-style three point belts, using the factory anchor points.

How does this work in a convertible, exactly?

And I thought front seat shoulder belts in a convertible were rare.

Compared to the rear belts, front belts in a convertible were like 69 Camaros at a car show...

I have purchased the following seatbelts for my 72 cutlass rehab project. It comes with
mounting hardware that anchors to the body. My kids have graduated from child seats.

Those are actually pretty cool. I guess the issue will be the location of the attach point in the trunk, and whether or not the middle strap interferes with the top in the lowered position.

Yes, I've been there. It seems that it is shoulder belts for the front seat. I'm missing pictures of the rear seat shoulder belt attachment points....If they exist.

I was dealing with the same issue, my 69 body manual does not show 3 point anchor bolts in the rear for a convertible. It maybe different for 1970, but I don't believe!

We decided to go with a seat suitable for 2 point belts. AFter she is to heavy for group 1 we will let her sit in the front with a child seat and three point belt, which is also recomended by law - at least in Germany!

Greetings
