Restore/Paint Plastic Dash Parts?

I've had all the dash trim re chromed on my 59 and am now putting the parts back together prior to install on the car. There are two plastic pieces that install on either side of the clock (which still works!) that look really bad and I'm not sure how to restore/repaint them. They are painted on the back side which has the lines and shape of the Olds rocket molded in. I would guess they originally painted in the red, then the white or silver, then the aluminum background. My questions are:
1. How do I strip or clean the pieces without destroying or melting the plastic?
2. If I were to successfully strip and clean them, what kind of paint could I use that would not eat the plastic?
3. Has anyone done this successfully in the past and are there any tips to offer?
Thanks.
John

chrome plastic

Guys:
I have done a couple of dash boards using paints designed for RC and slot car bodies, you can get it from most high end hobby shops. It starts w/ a special black undercoat and gets topped w/ a special "chrome" paint, it is applied w/ an air brush. If it is done correctly, the finished part looks great and is hard to tell from an actual chrome finish. Hope this helps.
Thanks Ron

Had vinyl stickers made

Thought I'd close this out. I was unable to come up with a way to properly restore the plastic pieces of the clock trim. I took a few pics of the piece and went to a place that makes vinyl signs. They worked up the design and printed it on brushed aluminum looking vinyl. Not as good as original but looks pretty good especially as compared to what I started with. Even had some extras made.

Very nice. I was going to suggest there are places that re-chrome plastic parts but I think what you had done looks even better.
