Radio Conversions

I sent my radio off to http://garytayman.com to be upgraded with one of their new FMR-1 conversions. This looks really cool and retains all the original radio controls. Has anyone else tried this?

They certainly are good-looking radios, but at the cost of your first-born child, I'm not so sure I'd go for it.

For the money I would be more inclined to leave the stock radio for looks and add a hidden radio with wireless control. There are some great systems out there

I just sent mine off to Turnswitch to have it cleaned, paint touch up on dials, and converted.

$385 + $250 for bluetooth

As my dash was already molested for a DIN-type radio I went with one of those:

Gelhard Classic 40 "Retro Look" RDS Autoradio CD MP3: Amazon.de: Elektronik Gelhard Classic 40 "Retro Look" RDS Autoradio CD MP3: Amazon.de: Elektronik

They come from different manufacturers and with different features. Mine's got

CD,
Bluetooth handsfree and audio streaming,
SD-/MMC Slot,
USB jack,
AUX in
RCA out for amp and sub
plays MP3/WMA from all media

And all for 100€ (about 135US$) and a reasonable chrome/old school look with black *****.

I had two radios done by Mike Hagen in Pennsylvania several years ago. One was a straight AM which is now AM/FM two speaker stereo for the convertible. The other is a Wonderbar AM/FM which is now a four speaker stereo for the Holiday Sedan. Both have been very satisfactory although I am not a person who blasts the music to be heard several miles away. They retain the original look except for a very small LCD in the center of the dial. All functions are as original including the Wonderbar.

Hello Dustin - I am thinking about using the same company for my conversion. Could you tell us how the bluetooth capability is working?

The bluetooth works perfectly. The instructions on how to pair were kind of vague, so I actually had to call them to get it figured out. Since they don't add any more buttons, the procedure involves turning one of the ***** back and forth in a specific manner. Once he told me exactly how to do it, it's very easy.

I bluetooth music and calls from my phone all the time. The other great thing is the 3.5mm headphone jack that they install. I have it run into the glove box, along with a USB charge cable and keep an Ipod nano in there for music also.

They did a good job of cleaning and touching up the radio face as well.
