1968 Cutlass Dash Removal
Hello,
I have been working on taking my dash out of my car. I have all the passenger nuts off but where are the driver side or are they pull off type? If anyone has photos or advise on pulling my dash out that would be great. Thanks
John

If you have air conditioning, good luck. There are two NUTS that must be removed around the leftmost duct that I found to be IMPOSSIBLE to get to. I ended up breaking the dash pad away(it was bad anyway tho), and re-installing the replacement with push in fasteners. If you can get the fuel gauge inst. cluster out you MIGHT be able to get to them after pulling the air duct out of the way. Be prepared for ALOT of cuts on the hands, as EVERYTHING under there seems to be like little razors.
Good luck

Here's the pics of the far drivers side.
Greg said his had two here, but I have two dash pads (one I removed myself) and they both only have one stud there. Maybe you'll be lucky and you'll only have one also.

There is one more stud on that side between the speedo and the tach/clock. It is between them, but up near the top. If you have your gauges out you should be able to feel it quite easily.
This is all much easier with the front seat(s) removed!!!

I did get the dash loose it was somewhat difficult more so around the heater control area as a few were finger tight. Also what wires am I looking to discount so I can take the gauges and wiring in one unit?

Take the two bolts out of the fuse block on the interior side of the block, disconnect the engine and forward light harness from the engine bay side, and the whole harness comes out with the dash (minus a few things like the heater control, door switches, etc which have to be disconnected)

I got the interior harness off but there are a few wires that I'm trying to figure how to get off one is the brake light switch I believe also I believe one is the hood light it looks like a brown wire or maybe it's the buzzer wire and how do I take the rear light harness off? Any photos of some of these places would help as I would like to take off what I need to and not everything if not needed. Thanks

I noticed that there are wires going under the carpet that appear to be attached to the rear of the harness and also the e brake wire not sure how it comes apart as it appears to be attached with a clamped on piece as everytime I try to pull it slides the switch down. Do I need to remove the carpet to get to the rear wiring as I had pulled a connector that appeared to be the same colors as rear.

Well I did get the e-brake wire off and I think I have all the other connectors loose but for some reason it's getting caught on the driver side when I try to pull it out is there a trick to getting it pulled out? I dropped the steering wheel and it's moving just won't pull out enough to start pulling the wires out. Also I noticed there is a gray wire on the heater for the light is there away to pull that out or does it need to stay? any other connectors I need to get off?

Your wire harness may be connected to the metal portion of the dash by a plastic connecter. If it is, it is attached below the speedometer. It's one of those types that wrap around the harness and there is a post that is pushed through a hole in the metal part of the dash.

I saw a bolt with some plastic on the underside of the dash but nothing was connected to it as it has broken plastic around it so I'm thinking that was the one you're talking about. I'm just not wanting to break the dash much more as the vinyl is cracking and breaking with every movement.

I'm afraid I can't be of much more help to you. Both times I took out my dash I unhooked all the electrical connections and left the harness in the car. Are you sure you have all of the stud nuts off?

I found where it was catching someone had put a ground wire from the fuel gauge and speedo and had it wrap around a post where the dash mounted. I had a question the speedo has a pink wire that isn't attached to anything do all gauges have that or maybe that was one of my issues with a short? Also what can I do to get the clock working as I haven't seen it move. I sprayed some wd40 and everything seems to move alright. Or what would be a bolt in tach as I think it would be nice. Also anyone building custom a pillars with a gauge pod as I think that would be a nice setup with oil temp or something like that.

yeah it's the speedo that has it it's just below the top small light bulb and just above the wiring it looked to be solder on. Also would the wiring harness in the fuse box be solder on as my wiring loom seems to have been spliced together and solder on. I thought it was weird as I would of thought it would of been one piece of wiring all the way
