Steering Wheel

I have a '71 Cutlass Supreme green on green . My steering wheel housing is heavily cracked . Do they make these reproduction ? Would the black rally steering wheel look funny with a green column ?

Black goes with any color.

The 70-72 cars used a black rally steering wheel no matter what the interior color was. The hub was painted to match the column, but the rim was black.

I know of a couple places that will restore your steering wheel but the proceedure is very pricy!

Mine has several cracks and the chrome inlay that runs around the face of the steering wheel is worn off. I don't like the black or sport wheels I see so I am going to save up and have my restored.

I can forward a web link if you think you want to go this route. It's a $400-$500 operation.

I'm not an authority but unless I misunderstand joe's comment that all 70-72 cars used black sport wheels no matter what color the interior, I have to disagree.

My Cutlass Supreme came with what I call a standard (not sport wheel) color matched to the interior. I bought this car new, in 1972 from a dealer. It was not a used and/or modified with after market add on's, car.

I have also seen pictures of other people's 70-72 Cutlass's that have the same type steering wheel as is on my Cutlass, color matched to the interior. Not sport steering wheels.

You misunderstood, though I will admit my original response could have been worded more clearly. The question was about the OPTIONAL four spoke steering wheel . In 1970-1972, IF the car was equipped with the four spoke sport wheel, it was only available in black.

You can fix the cracks using some careful preparation and a good repair epoxy (e.g Easton). Then, you can paint it the right color using SEM plastic/vinly paint. Before painting, clean it well with a good spray grease/wax remover, then apply a couple coats of Bulldog adhesive promoter (in a well ventilated area). Your painted column will look good as new.

I did it with a way cracked up '64 Cutlass steering wheel, and it's darned near good as new.
