okay as I was rolling down the rear Window the other day on a nice sunny afternoon in my 69 Olds Cutlass all was well. A short time later I went to roll the window up and about 1/2 way the crank stopped and soon after broke as I was trying to force it up.. I'm about to try and take everything apart and fix it and notice there looks like some kind of glue holding the int side trim on. When I took that back seat out recently, I noticed as well it had the original sound board and it had never been out before.(still glued at the top) Anyone know what I'm about to run into? I'm not sure yet exactly what's broke but know one ever gets in the back seat and all I really want to do is get the Window up. My friend said I probably need a new regulator. Can I just force the Window up with the trim off and force the Regulator. If not anyone know where I can get a regulator?

So the handle rotates and nothing happens?
It almost sounds to me that the gears had clashed. Forcing it then broke off one or more teeth. If so, then you need a new regulator. I think OPG and Parts Place had some rear regulators. How many miles does the car have? After 150K, all the regs on my car were showing wear. You might be able to pop off the rear quarter vent and look in there; possibly finnagling it to get it up. However, Finnagle's law states that anything that is broke will only break worse. ![]() I thought the rear trim just popped off like the door panels but there may be sticky caulk that may be stuck to the panels. Carefully pull them loose and keep track of what came off and how. Use a camera if that will help. Keep us posted...

Go to any auto store and buy yourself a cheap tool that is made specifically for removing window cranks. It will make your life easier. There is a U shaped clip that holds them on. Take the handles off before messing with the pannels. If they never been off there's black paper attached/glued.
If it's a rear window, take out the pannels. You've got to get inside to determne the problemo. Go for it, you can do it.

Thanks guys,... I got the window crank itself off easily. I"t doesn't look like the crank itself is stripped but the Regulator spot it goes on probably is. The crank just stripped as I forced it. Got impossible to roll up near the top. The Car has under 100,00 but is 40 years old so probably is the Regulator. the bad part is, it's only about an inch and a half from being up. I just thought I'd pick up the regulator if I had to before tearing the whole thing apart but was hoping to get lucky with a quick fix.

The regulator gears widen up, break, and strip easier and more often towards the top as that is where the window is under more force against weatherstripping. My car had 151K on the stock manual regs and the wear was evident - you could see it in the gears and felt it as you cranked it up.
Instead of buying new manual regs, i upgraded to power windows! ![]()

I guess I'll order a Regulator. Saw them at OPG I think for $100.00. Everything is $100.00 or more now a days.
Lady72nRob71 -That's exactly what happened with my Car. I actually thought the weather stripping was starting to jam up. Hopefully I won't need another regulator in this life time. No one will ever be in the back seat anway. And the back windows shall remain up for good! ![]() |
