What is the general consensus (if there is one) about the color of the inner lid on top of the air filter for the 69 H/O? I have seen both black and orange (same as the base). Thanks.

Hi Eric,
I agree with Jim. I have pics of six original unrestored '69's. All of them are grey. I believe it is a zinc phosphate finish. Some people call it "grey phosphate". Another interesting note that I notice in all of the pics is that the air cleaner base itself looks like a different color red than the engine block red. In all of the pics the air cleaner base looks almost like an orange-red color. Terry |

Thanks guys, but I may need to clarify. I am not talking about the big top cap and flapper. I meant the smaller pie pan lid that holds down the actual air cleaner element. The one that came with my car is the same orange-red as the base color. Thanks.

I am far from an expert, but all of them I have pics of, have black lids. Here is an example pic of an unrestored, all original 18,000 miler recently purchased from the original owner. Seems unlikely someone would intentionally change the color of the lid. Maybe some quantity came with red lids. I always wondered about the positive battery cable location. You see them routinely in two locations on survivors. They must have come both ways.
