1983 Hurst Olds with small block Chevy
Hi guys,
I need your opinion on a car. Would a small block chevy 350 installed in one of these greatly reduce the value? Or is that more of a purist thing? I would think it may hurt resale at some point.
Thanks,
Jon

In the case of a standard Cutlass from those years, I'd say not much because SBC engine was available factory installed.
However, in case of a Hurst/Olds or 85-87 442, to me it would render the car valueless. Others may disagree.
The corollary would be a Monte Carlo SS with a 307 Olds or Buick V6 transplanted. It would no longer have its "essence" so to speak.
There are cars you bugger with, and cars you don't.

It most definitely is NOT a LS engine. The car doesn't look bad in the pictures, I may look at it, I'm not sure yet. If it had a Big Block Olds in it, say a 455 with a built trans to handle the power would that hurt the value any? Just curious because if I bought it I would probably consider a Big Block as a replacement.

If it came with the 307, the better option would be the 350 or 403 olds to retain value. To make it a more easily serviceable driver car, the SBC would work .. but as has been said, it's only a clone at that point.

Well like I said I may look at, but I'm not holding my breath on it. In other news there is another one that I like better and is my preferred car at this point. It may be slightly high priced, but for what it is looks worth it to me. Here is that ad...http://altoona.craigslist.org/cto/4823113324.html
Let me know what you guys think of this one.
Thanks,
Jon
Hopefully a future owner of a Hurst Olds.

I think both sellers are asking to much. The sbc one by at least 2k the other one looks very nice but looks like 6k at least to much. I like these cars but aside from the HO stickers they are the same as the 85-87 442s which can be found a lot cheaper
FWIW history has has shown sellers rarely agree w my assessment of their cars values so YMMV

I think to an Olds guy...it just lost a lot of value.
To a run of the mill hotrod guy, it may have gone up in value.
In 10 years if these things continue to climb, not having the original engine will be a detriment.

Sorry I missed the link for the 1st one, so I deleted my earlier posts. I think the first one would be a fun toy and should be considered as such. It probably could be had for less with cash in fist when you go look at it.
I'm thinking the second one is priced too high for it's condition will probably need a lot of work. Be prepared for a major project.

Well the main reason I like them is they are limited production, 3001 in '83 versus how many '87 442's? I like the '87 442 as well and that is my other choice. I wish I could find a nice '87 442 for around $6000. It seems like all of them are over priced as well. Who knows maybe a should look at Grand Nationals, but they are overprice too as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks,
Jon

nice grand nationals bring more money than the hurst or 442, I have seen better hurst and 442 out there for the money than those just be patient and one will show up. post over in cars wanted you will get some hits, im sure you can find a nice 442 for 6000 to 7000

I would agree, unless the person buying it has the intension to reinstall a factory VIN Code 9-307 engine.....
Absolutely, may as well also change the color combo and remove all badges...

Just found this one out here in Cali by me.

That first link the OP posted said it was a Florida car, then someone mentioned a lift. Sure does look like it. I'd be willing to bet that car had at least a 22" wheel underneath it at some point. That would almost explain the engine swap as well. Many Oldsmobile G bodies in that raised suspension, big wheel culture ends up with a Chevy motor.

Yeah that first one I linked is starting to raise some red flags. The second one I linked while nice and I wouldn't mind looking at it, slightly overpriced in my opinion. I think I'm going to look at this '87 442 which by the way was posted here for some time by user name skryla.
