Oil pan removal

Has any one had a good experience removing the oil pan with the motor still in the car? Was thinking about changing the pan gasket on my 76 while I'm doing some other upgrades . Should I just bite the bullet and pull the motor ?

Good experience...? There is no such thing trying to do it in the car. Pull the engine, its so much easier. Here are some other opinions:

I've done it. It can be done. But it ain't fun, and it's enough work that there's a strong argument for just pulling the engine instead, and then being able to work on it properly.

This question comes up several times a year. The bottom line is that while it is possible to remove the pan with the engine in the car, you are only a few bellhousing and converter bolts away from pulling the engine. Your life will be MUCH happier if you do that. Think about it - once you get the pan off, you'll be under the car with oil dripping off the crank into your face.
