1969 gearing question

What 5-series gears were available in 1969? Perhaps high-4-series too?

Thanks!

4.33 and 4.66 which are listed above. there is also dealer installed 5.00 and I know Brian Trick and others (Dave B?) have said there was a small run of I think 5.13. I'm talking Type O gears

Thanks . . . someone told me their car had 5.00 but wasn't sure if it was 5-even or something like that (kinda like how some brands have 3.90 and others have 3.91).

I don't think that the 5.00 gear was available until 1970.

I believe you are correct. The 1968 SPECS book also only shows 4.33 and 4.66. Of course, a 5.00 gear set from 1970 could have been installed in a 1969 Type O housing once they were available.

Here's the 1968 page:

And here are pages from the 1970 powerteams booklet that show 4.33, 4.66, and 5.00 being available (see the fine print at the bottom of the chart):

If a G70 tire was 27 inches in diameter, I get 5000 rpm at 80 mph in top gear with 5.00s. That's screaming.

Correct. Of course, these are drag race gears. 10" slicks are typically 29" or 30" diameter. Even at that, however, if you are running 100 MPH in the traps, your hitting about 5600 RPM (admittedly very briefly). Also consider that slicks will grow slightly as tire RPM increases. The more important issue is how the 5.00 gears help your 60-ft times.

This is also a great example of how you need to match the gears to the tires to the car weight to the engine power band to the transmission etc etc. The need to shift THREE times in the quarter (with a four speed) probably negates any advantage of the 5.00 gears.

this one has 4:66 installed in late 69 by Berejik ...the original 3:91's are still with the car and will be re-installed at some point....but it is fun to drive!
